The year is 1848, a time of war.
At the gate of a military hospital surrounded by barbed wire in Brescia, Italy, stands Saint Mary de Rosa. Everyone’s heartbeat quickens. From behind the closed gate come shouts, screams, and the sound of fists pounding on the door. Fear fills the hearts of those inside the hospital.

The wounded, the sick, and even those caring for them know the reason for this fear. The shouts coming from outside belong to soldiers. These are not the cries of issuing or obeying military commands. Rather, they are the cries born of an uncontrollable desire to destroy and loot the hospital. Who can possibly stop them?

Inside the hospital there are only a few nuns of the congregation called the “Handmaids of Charity,” women who have dedicated their lives to caring for the sick. Even the hospital doctors do not want them. What they need, they say, are not nuns, but lay people with formal medical training. Added to this is the threat posed by the soldiers. In such a situation, these nuns appear to be completely useless. The reason for their racing hearts and deep fear is that Saint Mary de Rosa is about to open the door.

When the door is thrown wide open, the soldiers are astonished to see Saint Paula de Rosa standing in their way, holding a large crucifix in her hands, with six nuns beside her, including two holding lit candles. Witnessing this display of faith and courage, the soldiers retreat in shame into the darkness.

Throughout her life, Saint Paula de Rosa was never afraid to open new doors in the service of God, especially when it was uncertain what obstacles lay ahead. Those who did not truly know her assumed she was merely weak and fragile, but in reality she was armed with faith, endowed with boundless strength, intelligence, and an intense zeal for service.

The saint was born in 1813. From the age of seventeen, she was actively involved in her parish, organizing opportunities for prayer and meditation and initiating various projects for women. Recognizing her competence in these works, she was appointed, at the age of twenty-four, as the supervisor of a vocational workshop for poor girls. Two years later, realizing that these girls had nowhere to go at night, the saint desired to provide them with a safe home to protect them from the dangers they faced after dark. However, her superiors rejected this request. Her decision to leave that job was swift.

Saint once said, “If I miss even a small opportunity to do good, I will not be able to sleep peacefully that night.”
Therefore, after leaving her job, she built a shelter for poor girls and also helped her brother, who was running a school for the deaf.

At the age of twenty-seven, she found herself standing at another doorway—this time as the Superior of the congregation of the Handmaids of Charity. The mission of this congregation was to assist those suffering in hospitals from various illnesses. Along with her companions, Gabriela Bonatti and Monsignor Pinzoni, these nuns managed to earn the respect of people who had once thought of them as intruders.

In 1848, the saint believed her life was coming to an end, because first her companion Gabriela died, and then Monsignor Pinzoni also passed away. With their deaths, the saint was left completely helpless and without anyone to rely on. It was during this same period that war broke out across Europe. Their homeland was attacked. In such situations, it is common for many people, out of fear and hesitation, to hide under blankets in their bedrooms. But the saint, instead, sought new opportunities in whatever circumstances came before her.

The war left many people wounded and ill. The saint and the other nuns cared for the wounded in military hospitals and even went to the battlefields themselves, offering both spiritual comfort and physical healing to the injured and the dying. In 1855, the saint passed away. Even as she crossed her final doorway, she was not afraid at all. She departed in joy, going forever to be with her Lord.

In the footsteps of the saint:
The moment she knew that someone needed her help, she would set out immediately without hesitation. The next time someone asks for your help, do not turn them away with trivial excuses. Stop what you are doing and do what they need.
