John was born in 1542 as Juan de Yepes, the son of a poor silk weaver from Fontiveros in Toledo, in the region of Castile, Spain. His father was born into a wealthy noble family, but because he married a poor girl, he was cast out of the family and denied all rights to the family property. He chose silk weaving as his means of livelihood.

However, he could not earn much from it. Because he worked tirelessly to support his wife and three children, he died not long after John was born. With his death, the family fell into severe poverty. Many days they survived without food, and so John grew up small and weak in body.

Since he could not learn a trade, John worked at a hospital in Medina, serving the poor. Along with that, he continued his studies. In 1563, at the age of 21, he entered the Carmelite Order as a novice and took the name John of the Cross. Recognizing his abilities, the order ordained him a priest.

Later, he wished to join the Carthusians, who were known for their very strict monastic practices. Around this time, he met Saint Teresa of Ávila. At her insistence, he remained in the Carmelite Order, agreeing with her vision of reforming their order and deciding to assist her in this mission.

Thus, he became the first prior of the reformed branch of the Carmelites known as the “Discalced” (or “shoeless”) Carmelites. Although their reforms had been approved by the order’s general, many senior friars opposed them because of the strict new monastic practices. They labelled John a runaway and a rebel and imprisoned him. After nine months, risking his very life, John managed to escape.

Twice more before his death, they shamelessly persecuted, harassed, and publicly humiliated him. But all this cruelty only increased his inner peace and deepened his devotion towards heaven.

St. John of the Cross was one of the greatest spiritual writers of his time. On August 24, 1926, Pope Pius XI declared him a Doctor of the Church. St. John of the Cross is regarded as the patron of the spiritual life, the mysteries of theology, and of poets in Spain.
