നോമ്പ് കാലവുമായി വളരെ പൊരുത്തപെടുന്നതാണ് ഇന്നത്തെ നാമഹേതു തിരുന്നാള്. വളരെ ബുദ്ധിമതിയും കന്യകയുമായായ ഈ സിസിലിയന് രക്തസാക്ഷിയെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള വിവരങ്ങള് പുരാണകാലം മുതല് ഈ വിശുദ്ധക്ക് അര്പ്പിച്ചുവരുന്ന ആദരവില് നിന്നും ആചാരങ്ങളില് നിന്നുമുള്ള അനുമാനങ്ങളാണ്. ഇവളുടെ സഹനങ്ങളെ വിവരിക്കുന്ന വിവരങ്ങള്ക്ക് കുറച്ചു ആധികാരികതയേ ഉള്ളു. ഇവയനുസരിച്ച് വിശുദ്ധ രക്തസംബന്ധമായ രോഗത്താല് കഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന തന്റെ അമ്മയുമൊന്നിച്ച് കാറ്റോണിയയില് വിശുദ്ധ അഗതയുടെ ഭൗതീകശരീരം വണങ്ങുന്നതിനായി ഒരു തീര്ത്ഥയാത്ര പോയി. വളരെ ഭക്തിപൂര്വ്വം ആ ശവ കുടീരത്തില് പ്രാര്ത്ഥന നടത്തി കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള് വിശുദ്ധ അഗത സ്വപ്നത്തില് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും അവളെ ഇപ്രകാരം ആശ്വസിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
“അല്ലയോ കന്യകയായ ലൂസി, നിന്റെ അമ്മക്ക് വേണ്ടി നിനക്ക് കഴിയാത്ത എന്ത് സഹായമാണ് നീ എന്നില് നിന്നും ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്നത്? നിന്റെ വിശ്വാസം തന്നെ നിന്റെ അമ്മക്ക് തുണയാകും, അപ്രകാരം നിന്റെ അമ്മ സുഖം പ്രാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. നിന്റെ കന്യകാവിശുദ്ധിയാല് നീ ദൈവത്തിനു മനോഹരമായ ഒരു ഭവനം ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു.” ഉടനെ തന്നെ അവളുടെ അമ്മയുടെ അസുഖം ഭേദമായി.ലൂസി താന് കന്യകയായി തുടരുന്നതിനുള്ള അനുവാദം വാങ്ങിക്കുകയും ഭാവിയിലെ തന്റെ സ്ത്രീധനം മുഴുവനും ദരിദ്രരായ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികള്ക്ക് വീതിച്ചു കൊടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
അമ്മയും മകളും അവരുടെ ജന്മനഗരമായ സിറാക്കുസിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു പോന്നു. തുടര്ന്ന് ലൂസി തന്റെ സ്വത്ത് മുഴുവനും വിറ്റതിന് ശേഷം ആ തുക മുഴുവനും പാവങ്ങള്ക്കിടയില് വിതരണം ചെയ്തു. ലൂസിയുടെ ഇഷ്ടത്തിനു വിപരീതമായി മാതാപിതാക്കള് അവളെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്തു നല്കാമെന്ന് ഒരു യുവാവിന് വാഗ്ദാനം നല്കിയിരുന്നു. പ്രസ്തുത യുവാവ് ഇക്കാര്യങ്ങള് അറിഞ്ഞപ്പോള് അവളെ നഗരമുഖ്യന് മുന്പില് ഹാജരാക്കി. “മര്ദ്ദനങ്ങളുടെ പ്രഹര ശേഷിയില് നിന്റെ വാക്കുകള് നിശബ്ദമാക്കപ്പെടും” എന്ന് മുഖ്യന് അവളോടു പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള് വിശുദ്ധ ഇപ്രകാരം പ്രതിവചിച്ചു “ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദാസന്മാര്ക്ക് ശരിയായ വാക്കുകള്ക്ക് പോരായ്മ വരില്ല, പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് ഞങ്ങളിലൂടെ സംസാരിക്കും.” “ദൈവഭക്തിയിലും നിര്മ്മലതയിലും ജീവിക്കുന്ന എല്ലാവരും പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിന്റെ ദേവാലയങ്ങള് ആണ്'” എന്നും വിശുദ്ധ കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്ത്തു.
“ഞാന് നിന്നെ വേശ്യകള്ക്കൊപ്പം വിടുകയാണെങ്കില് പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് നിന്നെ വിട്ടു പോകും” എന്ന് മുഖ്യന് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള് “ഞാന് എന്റെ ആഗ്രഹത്തിന് വിപരീതമായി അപമാനിക്കപ്പെടുകയാണെങ്കില്, എന്റെ വിശുദ്ധി എനിക്ക് ഇരട്ട വിജയകിരീടം നേടി തരും” എന്നാണ് വിശുദ്ധ മറുപടി കൊടുത്തത്.
ഇത് കേട്ട് കോപത്താല് ജ്വലിച്ച മുഖ്യന് താന് ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തിയത് പോലെയുള്ള ശിക്ഷാവിധിക്ക് ഉത്തരവിട്ടു. പക്ഷേ ദൈവം തന്റെ വിശ്വസ്ത കന്യകക്ക് തന്റെ തീരുമാനത്തില് ഉറച്ചു നില്ക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള ശക്തി നല്കി. ഒരു ശക്തിക്കും അവളെ അവളുടെ തീരുമാനത്തില് നിന്നും വ്യതിചലിപ്പിക്കുവാന് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. “അപാരമായ ശക്തിയോടെ പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ കന്യകയെ അചഞ്ചലയായി നിര്ത്തി.” തുടര്ന്ന് അവര് ചൂടാക്കിയ ടാറും മരപ്പശയും വിശുദ്ധയുടെ മേല് ഒഴിച്ചു. “ഞാന് എന്റെ പ്രഭുവായ ക്രിസ്തുവിനോട് ഈ അഗ്നിക്ക് എന്റെ മേല് യാതൊരു ശക്തിയും ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കരുത് എന്നപേക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഇതിനു തെളിവായി എന്റെ മരണം നീട്ടി തരുവാന് ഞാന് ആപേക്ഷിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.” എന്നാണ് വിശുദ്ധ ഈ മര്ദ്ദനങ്ങള്ക്കിടക്ക് പറഞ്ഞത്. ഈ മര്ദ്ദനങ്ങള്ക്ക് ശേഷവും യാതൊരു പരിക്കും കൂടാതെ വിശുദ്ധ നില്ക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടപ്പോള് അവര് വിശുദ്ധയുടെകണ്ഠനാളം വാളിനാല് ചിന്നഭിന്നമാക്കി. ഇപ്രകാരം വിശുദ്ധ തന്റെ വിശ്വാസത്തിനു ചേര്ന്നവിധമുള്ള രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വ മകുടം ചൂടി.
Today’s feast-day is very fitting for the season of Lent. The information we have about this very intelligent virgin and Sicilian martyr comes mainly from the honour and traditions that have been offered to her since ancient times. The accounts describing her sufferings have only limited historical credibility. According to these accounts, the saint, who suffered from a blood-related disease, undertook a pilgrimage with her mother to Catania to venerate the relics of Saint Agatha. After praying with great devotion at the tomb, Saint Agatha appeared to her in a dream and comforted her with these words:
“O virgin Lucy, what help are you asking of me that your own faith cannot obtain for your mother? Your faith itself will aid your mother, and thus she will be healed. By your virginal purity you have prepared a beautiful dwelling for God.”
Immediately her mother recovered from her illness. Lucy then obtained permission to remain a virgin and distributed her future dowry among the poor Christians.
Mother and daughter returned to their native city of Syracuse. Lucy then sold all her property and gave the proceeds to the poor. But her parents had promised a young man that she would be given to him in marriage. When this young man learned of Lucy’s decision, he brought her before the city’s chief magistrate.
“When the blows of torture fall upon you, your words will be silenced,” the magistrate told her. Lucy replied, “The servants of God will never lack the right words to speak; the Holy Spirit will speak through us.” She added, “All who live in piety and purity are temples of the Holy Spirit.”
“If I hand you over to be defiled among prostitutes, the Holy Spirit will leave you,” the magistrate said. Lucy answered, “If I am dishonoured against my will, my purity will still win for me a double crown.”
Upon hearing this, the enraged magistrate ordered the punishment he had threatened. But God strengthened His faithful virgin so that she remained firm in her resolve. No force could shake her determination. “With immeasurable power, the Holy Spirit kept Christ’s virgin unshaken.”
They then poured boiling tar and resin over her. Lucy said during the torture, “I have prayed to my Lord Christ that this fire may have no power over me. As proof of this, I have asked that my death be delayed.”
Seeing that she remained unharmed even after these tortures, they cut her throat with a sword. Thus, the saint received the crown of martyrdom befitting her faith.
