Saint Eulalia (Eulalia) was born into a noble family in Spain. She received a Christian religious education. She learned about virtues such as devotion to God and compassion. From a very young age, she displayed a mind filled with piety, humility, and mercy. She had an unquenchable desire for the holiness of virginity.
Her serious nature, dislike for luxurious garments, detachment from worldly pleasures, and distance from her companions showed even in her childhood that she was living a heavenly life on earth. Even before she fully understood it, her heart had already risen above worldly life. Therefore, nothing that usually brings joy to young people meant anything to her. Each day of her life, she grew more and more in goodness.
When she was 12 years old, Emperor Diocletian issued a decree that everyone in his empire, regardless of age, gender, or profession, must offer sacrifices to the gods. Though young, Saint Eulalia considered this decree as the beginning of a war. But her mother, realizing her daughter’s unyielding desire for martyrdom, moved her to another country. However, the little saint escaped during the night and reached a place called Mérida before dawn.
That same morning, when the court assembled, she appeared before the cruel judge Dacian. Without any sign of respect or fear, she raised accusations against the order that forced people to abandon the one true God. The governor ordered her to be seized. First they tried to persuade her politely, then they attempted to tempt her, but when they failed, they placed the instruments of torture before her eyes and said, “If you only touch a little salt and incense with the tip of your finger, you will be spared all these tortures.”
Angered by such foolish talk, the saint threw down the idol and trampled the sacrificial items under her feet. Considering her young age, viewing it as carelessness, or thinking she acted out of fear of impending punishment, this could have been excused as a minor offense. But by the judge’s command, two executioners tore the flesh from her tender body with hooks until only the bones remained. Even while enduring these tortures, she cried out that these were the victorious crowns of Jesus.
Next, by using burning torches, they scorched her breasts and both sides of her body. Even during this torture, instead of trembling or groaning, only words of thanksgiving came from her lips. Gradually the fire burned her hair and then spread around her head and face. Because of the flames and smoke, her face and head could no longer be seen.
According to tradition, a white dove emerged from her mouth and flew upward, fluttering its wings, as the saint died. Seeing this wondrous sight, the executioners were terrified, left her body there, and fled. The saint’s relics are preserved with great reverence in a place called Oviedo. She is considered the patron saint of Oviedo. In the Roman Martyrology, her name is mentioned on December 10.
