Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra, is one of the most highly venerated saints in the Western world. His memory is still preserved in America in the form of the joyful, stout, white-bearded Santa Claus, who comes on the night before Christmas with promises and gifts for children. He is primarily regarded as the patron saint of children. Sailors, merchants, confectioners, travelers, and pawnbrokers also invoke and honor him. Along with Saint Andrew, Saint Nicholas is considered one of the co-patrons of Russia.

He was born toward the end of the third century in Asia Minor. His uncle was the Metropolitan of Myra in Lycia. He appointed Nicholas as the abbot of a nearby monastery. After his uncle’s death, Nicholas was elevated to the position of the next Metropolitan. He continued in this office until his death.

During the persecution under Emperor Diocletian, he was imprisoned for preaching Christian doctrines. However, during the reign of Emperor Constantine, he was released.

Many beautiful stories exist about him. One of the most famous concerns his compassion for the poor. A destitute man in Patara, unable to provide dowries for his three daughters, was distressed and eventually decided, in despair, to force them into prostitution. Learning of this, Saint Nicholas secretly dropped three bags of gold through the man’s window. Thus, he provided dowries for the daughters without revealing himself. It is said that the three golden balls used as a symbol by pawnbrokers originated from these three bags of gold.

Saint Nicholas died around December 6, near the year 345. His body was buried in a church at Myra. It remained there until 1087, when sailors from Bari, a port town in Italy, seized the relics and brought them to their city. By then, devotion to the saint had already spread widely throughout Europe and even Asia. In the Western world, this devotion helped spark a religious revival. Numerous miracles are said to have occurred through his intercession. His relics, kept in the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari, are believed to exude an oily liquid with medicinal properties known as manna di San Nicola.

Dutch Protestants in New Amsterdam circulated another famous story about him. In that tale, he was depicted as a magician or wonder-worker. The concept of Santa Claus originated from this version of the story. However, Catholic believers honor him as a saint, a devout Christian, and the Bishop of Myra. In Greece, Russia, Naples, Sicily, Lorraine, and in various cities across Italy, Germany, Austria, and Belgium, he is revered as a patron and intercessor.
