At a time when the veneration of the images and icons of the saints was being opposed, the person who stood foremost in defending and preserving them was Saint John of Damascus. When John was born, Damascus was under the rule of the Caliphs. Nevertheless, Christians were allowed to hold high positions in the government. John’s father was a high official in the Caliph’s public revenue department and was also a devout Christian. He entrusted his son’s education to Cosmas, a monk who had been brought from Sicily as a slave.

Cosmas taught Saint John theology, science, and literature. Following his father, John too was appointed to his father’s government position. While living in the royal court, he was an exemplary Christian to everyone around him. But his heart was set on something far greater. He resigned from his post and became a monk at the Monastery of Saint Sabbas, near Jerusalem.

In this monastery, he devoted himself to writing and composing hymns. When the Iconoclast Emperor Leo the Isaurian issued a decree forbidding the veneration of icons and images, Saint John boldly accepted the challenge and wrote treatises defending and preserving this ancient tradition.

At this time, the Patriarch of Jerusalem wished to have John in his priestly ranks. Accordingly, John was brought to Jerusalem and ordained a priest. However, a few years later, he returned to his monastery and spent the remainder of his life writing. His most famous work is “The Fountain of Wisdom.”

In this great work, he compiled the teachings of all major theologians who lived before him. It was his first attempt to give us the essence of theology and philosophy in a structured form. Saint John’s writings are an inexhaustible treasury of ancient traditions. In 1890, Pope Leo XIII declared him a Doctor of the Church.
