Saint Francis Xavier was one of the most brilliant evangelizers in the Holy Church.
He was born into the noble Basque family in Spain. After completing his education at the University of Paris and obtaining a postgraduate degree, he began teaching philosophy there. It was during this time that he met Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Soon, he became one of the first seven Jesuits. Though they wished to visit the Holy Land, the war between Venice and Turkey prevented them from doing so. Thus, for some time Saint Francis lived and worked in Padua, Bologna, and Rome.
In 1540, Saint Ignatius chose him for the mission of preaching the Gospel in the Portuguese territories of the East Indies. With four official papal documents introducing him to the Eastern princes, he set out from Lisbon. He arrived in Goa, thus beginning a ten-year-long missionary journey.
In Goa, he preached to adults, and he would walk the streets ringing a bell to gather children and teach them Scripture. He also visited hospitals and prisons. Gradually, he began proclaiming the Gospel among the people of India. By turning the teachings of the Catholic Church into simple local stories and little songs, he engraved the faith deeply into the hearts of the people. Later, he went to Kanyakumari, where he began baptizing the Paravars.
On some days, because of the large number of people coming for Baptism, his arms pained so severely that he could hardly lift them. From there he went to Travancore, where he built about 45 churches in various villages. Afterwards he travelled to Malacca, where for nearly eighteen months he went from island to island preaching the Gospel and administering Baptism.
When he returned to Goa, he set out with some companions for Japan, hoping to gather the harvest of souls there. Arriving in Kagoshima in 1549, he first learned the local language. Later, he began preaching the Gospel and was successful in his efforts. Ten years after converting the first Christians there, he found them holding firmly to the same zeal and faith. Such was the success of his Japanese mission.
In 1551, with the intention of visiting the converts he had made in India, he returned again to Malacca. At this time he also had a new purpose—China, the land of the pagans. But he was never able to reach it. Upon reaching the mouth of the Canton River on the island of Sancian, he was struck by a severe fever. He was abandoned on the burning sands. However, a poor man named Alvarez found him and took him to his hut. For about two weeks, Saint Francis lived there, praying continuously, but eventually he died. Even in death, his gaze remained fixed upon his crucifix. He was buried in a small, narrow grave.
Three months later, when the grave was opened, his body was found intact, without any decay or damage. It was later brought to Goa, where it is still preserved today.
Later, Pope Saint Pius X declared Saint Francis Xavier the heavenly patron of foreign missions and all missionary activities.
