റോമാക്കാരിയായ വിശുദ്ധ ബിബിയാന ജൂലിയന് ചക്രവര്ത്തിയുടെ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലാണ് രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വം വരിച്ചത്. ഐതിഹ്യം അനുസരിച്ച് ക്രിസ്തുവില് വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്ന ഫ്ലാവിയന്, ദഫ്രോസ എന്നിവരായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധ ബിബിയാനയുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കള്. ദഫ്രോസയെ തലയറുത്ത് കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുകയും, റോമന് പുരോഹിതനായിരുന്ന ഫ്ലാവിയനെ ചൂടാക്കിയ ഇരുമ്പ് കൊണ്ട് മുഖം പൊള്ളിക്കുകയും നാട്കടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ബിബിയാനയേയും അവളുടെ സഹോദരിയായ ദിമെട്രിയായേയും അവരുടെ എല്ലാ സമ്പാദ്യങ്ങളും കണ്ടുകെട്ടിയതിനു ശേഷം വീട്ടു തടങ്കലിലാക്കി. അഞ്ചു മാസത്തോളം ഈ സഹോദരിമാര് ഉപവസിച്ചു. അവരെ ന്യായാപീഡത്തിന് മുന്നില് ഹാജരാക്കിയപ്പോള് വിശുദ്ധയുടെ സഹോദരിയായ ദിമെട്രിയാ അവിടെ വച്ച് മരണമടഞ്ഞു. ന്യായാധിപന് വിശുദ്ധ ബിബിയാനയെ ഫുഫിനാ എന്ന സ്ത്രീക്ക് കൈമാറി.
ഈ സ്ത്രീ തന്റെ മുഴുവന് കഴിവും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വിശുദ്ധയെ ക്രിസ്തുവിലുള്ള വിശ്വാസം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുവാന് പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചെങ്കിലും അവരുടെ ശ്രമങ്ങളെല്ലാം വൃഥാവിലായി. അതിനേതുടര്ന്ന് വിശുദ്ധയെ ഈയം കൊണ്ടുള്ള മുള്ളാണികള് നിറഞ്ഞ ചമ്മട്ടികൊണ്ടടിച്ച് കൊലപ്പെടുത്തി. നായ്ക്കള്ക്ക് ഭക്ഷണമാകാന് വേണ്ടി അവളുടെ മൃതദേഹം വെളിമ്പ്രദേശത്തു വലിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞു. എന്നാല് ഒരു നായപോലും വിശുദ്ധയുടെ മൃതദേഹത്തില് സ്പര്ശിക്കുക പോലും ചെയ്തില്ല.
രണ്ടു ദിവസത്തിന് ശേഷം ജോണ് എന്ന് പേരായ ഒരു പുരോഹിതന് രാത്രിയില് അവളുടെ മൃതശരീരം മറവു ചെയ്തു. റോമില് പ്രത്യേകമായി ആദരിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന കന്യകമാരായ മൂന്ന് രക്തസാക്ഷികളില് ഒരാളാണ് വിശുദ്ധ ബിബിയാന. വിശുദ്ധ സെസീലിയായും വിശുദ്ധ ആഗ്നസുമാണ് മറ്റ് രണ്ടുപേര്.
Saint Bibiana, a Roman, was martyred during the reign of Emperor Julian. According to tradition, her parents Flavian and Dafrosa were believers in Christ. Dafrosa was beheaded, and Flavian—who was a Roman priest—was tortured by burning his face with heated iron and then exiled.
Bibiana and her sister Demetria were placed under house arrest after all their possessions were confiscated. The two sisters fasted for five months. When they were brought before the court, Demetria collapsed and died on the spot. The judge handed over Saint Bibiana to a woman named Rufina.
This woman used all her influence and skill to persuade Bibiana to renounce her Christian faith, but all her efforts were in vain. Enraged, she had Bibiana beaten to death with a scourge tipped with leaden balls. Her body was then thrown into an open field to be eaten by dogs. Yet not even a single dog touched the saint’s body.
After two days, a priest named John secretly buried her body at night. Saint Bibiana is one of the three virgin martyrs especially venerated in Rome. The other two are Saint Cecilia and Saint Agnes.
