എലോയി എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന വിശുദ്ധ എലീജിയൂസ് ഫ്രാന്സിലെ ലിമോഗസിനു സമീപം ഏതാണ്ട് 590-ലാണ് ജനിച്ചത്. വളരെ വിദഗ്ദനായ ഒരു ഇരുമ്പ് കൊല്ലനായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. പാരീസിലെ ക്ലോട്ടയര് രണ്ടാമന് രാജാവിന്റെ കാലത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം രാജാവിന്റെ നാണയ നിര്മ്മാണ ശാലയിലെ മേല്നോട്ടക്കാരനായി നിയമിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ക്രമേണ എലീജിയൂസ് രാജാവുമായി വളരെ അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്ബന്ധത്തിലാവുകയും ഒരു ഇരുമ്പ് കൊല്ലനെന്ന നിലയില് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തി പരക്കെ അറിയപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. വളരെയേറെ പ്രശസ്തനായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും എലീജിയൂസ് പാവങ്ങളോട് കരുണയുള്ളവനായിരുന്നു, അനേകം അടിമകളെ അദ്ദേഹം മോചനദ്രവ്യം നല്കി മോചിപ്പിച്ചു. കൂടാതെ സോളിഗ്നാക്കില് അനേകം പള്ളികളും ആശ്രമങ്ങളും പണികഴിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ക്ലോട്ടയറിന്റെ മകനും രാജാവുമായ ദഗോബെര്ട്ട് ഒന്നാമനില് നിന്നും പാരീസില് തനിക്ക് ലഭിച്ച സ്ഥലത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു വലിയ സന്യാസിനീ മഠം പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചു. 629-ല് എലീജിയൂസ് ദഗോബെര്ട്ട് രാജാവിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഉപദേഷ്ടാവായി നിയമിതനായി. പിന്നീട് ദഗോബെര്ട്ട് ഏല്പ്പിച്ച ദൗത്യവുമായി അദ്ദേഹം ബ്രെട്ടോണിലെ രാജാവായ ജൂഡിക്കായലിനെ ദഗോബെര്ട്ടിന്റെ അധീശത്വം സ്വീകരിക്കുവാന് പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചു.
ഒരു പുരോഹിതനായി ദൈവത്തെ സേവിക്കുക എന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആഗ്രഹം അദ്ദേഹം നിറവേറ്റികൊണ്ട് 640-ല് അദ്ദേഹം പൗരോഹിത്യ പട്ടം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് നോയോണിലെയും ടൂര്നായിലെയും മെത്രാനായി വാഴിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. സുവിശേഷ പ്രഘോഷണത്തിനുള്ള അടങ്ങാത്ത ആഗ്രഹവുമായി അദ്ദേഹം ഫ്ലാണ്ടേഴ്സിലെ ആന്റ് വെര്പ്പ്, ഗെന്റ്, കോര്ട്ടായി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളില് സുവിശേഷം പ്രഘോഷിക്കുകയും അനേകം സന്യാസിനീ മഠങ്ങള് പണികഴിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. തന്റെ കഴിവും സമ്പത്തും മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ ക്ഷേമത്തിനായി വിനിയോഗിക്കുക എന്നത് ശരിക്കും ദൈവീകമായ ഒരു കാര്യമാണ്. വിശുദ്ധ എലീജിയൂസ് എല്ലാവരാലും വളരെയേറെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയും ധാരാളം പേരെ ക്രിസ്തുവിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ട് വരികയും ചെയ്തു. ഏതാണ്ട് 660-നോടടുത്ത് ഡിസംബര്-1ന് എലീജിയൂസ് മരണമടഞ്ഞു.
Saint Eligius, also known as Eloy, was born around the year 590 near Limoges in France. He was a highly skilled blacksmith. During the reign of King Clotaire II of Paris, he was appointed supervisor of the royal mint. Gradually, Eligius became a very close friend of the king, and his fame as a master craftsman spread far and wide.
Despite his great reputation, Eligius was compassionate toward the poor. He freed many slaves by paying their ransom. He also built numerous churches and monasteries in Solignac. On land granted to him in Paris by King Dagobert I, the son and successor of Clotaire, he constructed a large convent for nuns. In 629, Eligius was appointed chief advisor to King Dagobert. Later, on a mission entrusted to him by Dagobert, he persuaded Judicael, the king of Brittany, to accept Dagobert’s overlordship.
Fulfilling his long-cherished desire to serve God as a priest, Eligius was ordained in 640. He was later consecrated bishop of Noyon and Tournai. With an unquenchable zeal for evangelization, he preached the Gospel in Antwerp, Ghent, and Courtrai in Flanders, and founded many more convents for nuns.
To use one’s abilities and wealth for the good of others is truly a divine act. Saint Eligius was loved by everyone, and he brought many people to Christ. He died around December 1, near the year 660.
