Saint Nicholas, who was born to Hermann and Margaret, residents of Skänninge in Sweden, grew up in a home known for its noble character and virtue. From an early age, under the care of his pious parents, Nicholas was brought up in the fullness of Christian devotion. He resolved never to defile the garment of innocence and holiness he received through baptism. He began his grammar studies at home, and at a very young age, he was sent to Paris for further education. Later, he moved to Orléans, where he completed his theological studies and earned degrees in both civil and ecclesiastical law.

Nicholas returned to his hometown well-versed in virtue and scholarship, and he was soon appointed as the Archdeacon of Linköping. His entire life was one of repentance and deep devotion. He led a very simple life—on Fridays, his only food was bread with a little salt and water. On some occasions, he fasted completely from Thursday evening until noon on Saturday.

During his duties, he endured many hardships at the hands of tyrants and sinners, but he bore all of them joyfully. He brought education to the illiterate people of the region and instilled church discipline among them. According to the historical records of the bishops of Linköping, Gottskalk was the 16th bishop of Linköping, and upon his death, Saint Nicholas was consecrated as the bishop.

This position was a great encouragement to Nicholas, who was already enthusiastic about spreading the glory of God and religious works. He committed himself fully to God’s service and to serving his neighbors, setting aside all personal interests. Prayer and meditation were his comfort and strength. His personal enjoyment was studying the Holy Scriptures. He compiled a precious book by collecting useful sayings from church law and teachings from the Church Fathers.

He called this book the Huijrtebook. Drawing inspiration from the righteousness of Saint Gregory, the works of Saint Anselm, and the writings of Saint Bridget, he dedicated himself to writing short notes. He offered his full support in the canonization efforts of these saints. The same year he completed that work, Saint Nicholas passed away. He entered eternal rest in the Lord in 1391.

Saint Nicholas also wrote biographies of Saint Bridget, Saint Ansgar (Ansgarius), and other servants of God. He authored a book based on the Psalms as well. According to a letter written by Pope Urban VI in 1381, which Benselius refers to, the pope held Saint Nicholas’s sanctity in great esteem. His successor, Bishop Canute, also deeply respected his holiness.

Saint Nicholas is counted among the patron saints of Sweden, along with Saint Sigfrid, Saint Brynolf, Saint Birgitta, Saint Helena, and Saint Ingrid. According to Benselius, in the old Swedish liturgy, prayers were offered to Saint Nicholas on his feast day during the Eucharist.
