Saint Peter, who was the Metropolitan of Tarentaise, was a native of Dauphiné.
He was known for his insatiable desire for learning, sharp intelligence, and extraordinary memory. These traits greatly aided him in his studies. At the age of 20, he received the monastic habit from the Bonnevaux monastery. He led a strict monastic life filled with prayer and hard labor like chopping wood and plowing the fields.
His lifestyle included eating once a day with only leaves and vegetables, and sleeping for just four hours a night. He accepted all hardships with devotion and joy.
Coming from a very devout and compassionate family, his relatives eventually followed in his path. His father and two brothers joined his monastery, while his mother and sister joined a nearby convent of the same religious order.
A year after he became a monk, Amadeus—who was closely related to Emperor Conrad—and sixteen other notable individuals followed his example. Amadeus built four monasteries for their order, one of which was the Tamis or Stomedium monastery in the mountain regions of the Tarentaise diocese. Saint Peter, who was nearly 30 years old, was appointed as its first abbot.
The Tamis monastery was like a dwelling of angels on earth. The monks continuously praised, worshipped, and loved God. With the help of Amadeus III of Savoy, Saint Peter established a hospital for the poor and sick there, and he personally served as its first caretaker.
In 1142, the ruler of Savoy selected him as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Tarentaise. Although he was reluctant to accept the new position, pressure from Saint Bernard and the general assembly of his order led him to accept. The diocese desperately needed an apostolic figure like him due to its dire condition.
Most of the churches in the diocese were seized and defiled by laypeople. Many priests were immersed in immoral behavior and spread injustice through their example. Saint Peter wept when he saw the state of his diocese and prayed to God day and night for assistance, offering his fasting and prayers for the cleansing of the region. He did not alter his ascetic lifestyle even after becoming a bishop.
He frequently visited different parts of his diocese and appointed capable and virtuous priests to many parishes. After becoming Metropolitan, he noticed the cathedral was disorganized and the worship conducted there was careless. He swiftly restored order and turned it into a center of devotion. He recovered all the sources of income that had been illegally seized by laymen.
He also established many educational institutions for the youth and became a source of comfort for the poor. He renovated numerous churches and revived spiritual practices. Historians testify that he performed several miracles, such as healing the sick and multiplying food during times of famine. Despite his public duties, he never lost his desire for solitude.
After successfully leading his diocese for 13 years, Saint Peter suddenly disappeared in 1155. He went to a Cistercian monastery in Germany, but no one knew his whereabouts. His family and the diocese were deeply saddened by his disappearance. Despite intense efforts to find him, all searches failed—until divine providence led to his discovery.
A young man, who had grown up under his guidance, happened to visit the monastery where Peter was living in hiding. Recognizing him while observing the monks at work, the young man informed others. Although Saint Peter was deeply saddened at being found, he saw it as God’s will and returned to his diocese.
He resumed his mission with renewed zeal. He always paid special attention to the poor and performed numerous charitable works. To help poor travelers, he established a hospital in the Alps.
When Emperor Frederick I supported the anti-Pope Octavian (under the name Victor) against the true Pope Alexander III, Saint Peter was the only one in the empire to speak out boldly. He opposed this injustice in many councils. Although the emperor exiled Peter’s supporters, he could only show reverence before Saint Peter himself.
Saint Peter preached the Gospel in Alsace, Burgundy, Lorraine, and many parts of Italy, performing many miracles during his journeys. Pope Alexander III sent him to France and Normandy to mediate between warring kings. Even in his old age, he continued preaching wherever he went. King Louis VII of France received him with great reverence.
In the presence of the French emperor, the lord of Flanders, and other nobles, Saint Peter restored the sight of a blind man. After thorough verification, they declared it a miracle.
From Paris, he went to Chaumont in Normandy, where King Henry II of England knelt before him. In Peter’s presence, he healed a deaf girl and gave her the ability to speak. On Palm Sunday in 1171, the King of England and his entire entourage received Holy Communion from him.
Later, Saint Peter resolved a conflict between two kings. Though he returned to his church, the King of England asked for his help in reconciling with his own son—but this mission saw limited success. During his return journey, Peter fell ill and passed away in the Lord at the Bellevaux monastery in the Diocese of Besançon in 1174.
In 1191, Pope Celestine III canonized Metropolitan Peter as a saint.
