Saint Philip

Saint Philip was one of the first disciples of Christ. Immediately after the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, Saint Philip became one of His followers. According to the Gospel of John, “The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, ‘Follow me.’ Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’ And Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.'” (John 1:43-46).

There is little more information available about Saint Philip in the Scriptures. However, his relics are preserved in the Holy Apostles Church in Rome.

Saint James

Saint James, the brother of Jude, was from the town of Cana in Galilee. He is also known as James the Less and is the author of the Epistle of James in the New Testament. Saint James was one of those fortunate enough to witness the risen Christ (1 Corinthians 15:7). After the apostles scattered, Saint James was appointed as the bishop of Jerusalem. Saint Paul mentions visiting him in his letter to the Galatians (Galatians 1:19).

In the Council of Jerusalem, as recorded in Acts of the Apostles, it was Saint James who spoke after Saint Peter (Acts 15:13). He was martyred by the Jewish authorities. He was severely beaten and thrown down from the temple’s pinnacle, after which he was stoned to death.

A moving description of his martyrdom is found in worship texts: “When he was 96 years old, he had been governing the Church for 36 years. The Jews plotted to stone him, and he was thrown from the temple’s pinnacle, landing headfirst. His legs were broken, and as he lay half-conscious, he raised his arms to heaven and prayed for the forgiveness of his enemies, saying, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.’ As he was praying, a final blow was struck to his head.”

Saint James’ relics, along with those of Saint Philip, are preserved near each other in the Holy Apostles Church in Rome. Their names are included in the first list of saints in the worship liturgy.
