There is only limited information about the life of Saint Joseph in historical records. Still, we all know of him as the chaste husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the foster father of Jesus, a carpenter, and a poor man. We also know he belonged to the royal lineage of King David.

Saint Joseph had no desire for wealth. He was content with the wages earned through his labor. His unwavering trust in God guided his life. With complete faith in the providence of the Heavenly Father — who feeds the birds of the sky and adorns the lilies of the field — Joseph lived a life of hard work and suffering. Perhaps because he was born poor, he had a fatherly love for the poor. The importance of labor in God’s plan of salvation is reflected in the fact that both the Son of God and His foster father were carpenters.

After the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph was the person who most cooperated with Jesus in the work of redemption. Remaining behind the scenes of the mystery of the Incarnation and saving the infant Jesus from danger, Saint Joseph played a crucial role in the plan of salvation. He labored intensely to protect and raise the divine child.

According to the records, Saint Joseph was a compassionate man who lived in perfect obedience to God’s will. He was always ready to support the Holy Family. Since we do not see Joseph during Jesus’ public ministry, at His death, or after the Resurrection, many historians believe he passed away before Jesus began His public life.

Saint Joseph is also venerated as the patron of many causes — the Universal Church, those on their deathbeds, and missionary efforts. Over time, May Day has been dedicated to workers, and thus to Saint Joseph the Worker. Pope Pius XII stated that this feast highlights the dignity of labor and provides a spiritual perspective for workers’ movements.

To honor Saint Joseph — the foster father of Jesus and the patron of the Universal Church — is truly a blessing. The liturgical calendar includes two feasts in his name: the Feast of Saint Joseph, Husband of Mary, on March 19, and the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, celebrated on May 1.

“Saint Joseph was a deeply spiritual man, a man of firm faith. His strength came not from his own words but from listening to the Word of the Living God. His heart was always ready to accept the truth found in the silent words of God,” said Pope John Paul II in remembrance of Saint Joseph.

Liturgical celebrations and catechesis consistently emphasize the spiritual value of human labor. The Second Vatican Council, in its opening prayer, proclaimed that God, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, calls men and women of every age to develop their talents and use them for the good of others.

The second part of that same prayer states: “May we complete the work God has entrusted to us and receive the reward He has promised.” As the short prayer of Zechariah puts it: “Saint Joseph worked faithfully at his carpentry. He is a shining example for all workers.”

The liturgy for Saint Joseph’s feast upholds the right to work — a message our modern world needs to hear and understand.

Popes John XXIII, Paul VI, and John Paul II, as well as the documents of the Second Vatican Council, emphasize the Christian spirituality of work through the example of Saint Joseph. These teachings affirm that work done in service of the family has its own special dignity.
