Saint Casimir was the third son of King Casimir IV of Poland and Queen Elizabeth of Austria, the daughter of Emperor Albert II. From a young age, Casimir exhibited strong devotion to God and dedicated himself to prayer, repentance, and spiritual matters. He was known for his humility and self-discipline, and he faced all challenges with courage. A significant portion of his nights was devoted to prayer and meditation, especially meditating on the sufferings of the Savior.
Casimir’s attire was simple, and since he always remained in the presence of God, he was peaceful and filled with grace at all times. His love for God was manifested through his compassion for the poor. He spent all his resources to uplift the poor and also used his influence with his father and his brother Ladislaus, the King of Bohemia, to help the needy.
Saint Casimir had a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and constantly recited the Latin prayer “Omni die Mariae” (Daily, daily sing to Mary). According to his wishes, a copy of this prayer was included with him, and the hymn was particularly mentioned in the translation of the work by Bittleston. This hymn, known as “Daily, daily sing to Mary,” is often called the hymn of Saint Casimir, even though it was composed three centuries before his time.
In 1471, certain nobles in Hungary, dissatisfied under King Matthias Corvinus, requested King Casimir IV of Poland to allow his son, Casimir, to be their king. At this time, the young saint was not yet 15 years old and had no interest in the request. To avoid defying his father, he led an army to the border. However, since Matthias had gathered a large army, and many of his soldiers had not been paid, the mission failed. Saint Casimir consulted his military officers and decided to retreat.
Meanwhile, Pope Sixtus IV sent a diplomatic mission to Casimir’s father, urging him to allow his son to live according to his wishes. The pope was motivated by a firm belief that what the prince desired was righteous. Despite the failure of his military ambition, King Casimir became angry and prevented his son from entering Kraków, sending him to the Dobki Castle. Saint Casimir obeyed without resistance and spent three months in confinement.
Realizing the injustices of war, Saint Casimir made a firm decision never to participate in such wars again, as they were mutually destructive and helped the Turks establish dominance in Europe. Even when his father and the Hungarian nobles later asked him to take up arms, Saint Casimir never again held a weapon. Instead, he returned to his studies and prayers. In his father’s absence, he served as the viceroy of Poland for a time.
Despite strong pressure to marry the daughter of Emperor Frederick III, Saint Casimir rejected the proposal. In 1484, at the age of 26, Saint Casimir died due to a respiratory illness. He was buried in Vilnius, and his physical remains are preserved at the St. Stanislaus Church there. Many miracles have been reported at his tomb. He was canonized as a saint in 1521. The Polish people continue to honor him as the “Peacemaker” and venerate his memory.
