During the reigns of King Shapur II and III, at the end of the fourth century in Persia, Christian persecution was extremely brutal. The religious persecution carried out by King Beranus in 421 was particularly severe. A description of this torture was recorded by the contemporary Theodoret. Christians were tortured in various ways, including being stabbed with spikes, having their skin flayed, and subjected to many other forms of cruelty.

During the reign of King Beranus, a sixth-century man named Benjamin, who was a low-ranking noble, was persecuted. After enduring cruel tortures, he was imprisoned. A year later, he was released with the condition that he would no longer preach the Christian faith. However, filled with the Holy Spirit, he decided that the truth could not be silenced and began preaching once more. When the king heard about this, he summoned Benjamin for questioning.

Realizing that Benjamin would not renounce Christ, the king ordered him to be tortured. The soldiers continued to pierce thorns into the flesh under the nails of Benjamin’s fingers. This continued in the most tender parts of his body. Finally, a stake was driven into his stomach, piercing his intestines. Thus, in 424, he received the crown of martyrdom.
