The name “Climacus” became associated with John as the author of the distinguished book “The Ladder of Divine Ascent,” which leads to the climax or perfection. He was born in Palestine in 524. The capable John, at the age of sixteen, not only renounced the world’s distractions but also became a hermit at the age of twenty-two, beginning his ascetic life on Mount Sinai. He accepted the teachings of a monk named Martinius and settled in a small hut on a mountain slope. Through self-denial, silence, humility, and devout prayer, he ascended spiritually from the visible mountains to the invisible God.

At the age of thirty-five, after his spiritual teacher passed away, John sought the guidance of another master and moved to the Thebaid region. On Saturdays and Sundays, he would go to the chapel on the mountain, participating in divine liturgies and other prayers. He consumed very simple food, refraining from meat and fish. His studies focused on the Holy Scriptures and the writings of the Church Fathers. When he noticed that people were familiar with his humble hut, he retreated to a cave in the mountains to devote himself to prayer and meditation.

Many sought John’s advice and found comfort in his words. However, some envious individuals criticized him, claiming that he wasted time on lengthy sermons. Although this was merely an accusation, John observed the situation and chose to remain silent for twelve months. When his critics saw his humility, they asked him to resume his teachings. People began to regard him as a modern-day sage.

He lived in the hut for forty years. At the age of seventy-five, he was chosen as the abbot of the monks at Sinai. During this time, he wrote a book on spiritual perfection in response to the requests of many. This book became the reason for his second name, “Climacus”, or “The Ladder.” Observing that authority often leads to worldly distractions, he resigned from his position shortly before his death. Devoting himself entirely to contemplation, he passed away on March 30, 605.
