The information about these saints has been derived from the records prepared by an Armenian nobleman and a person named Esayas, who were part of King Sapor’s army. In the eighth year of his reign, King Sapor began a brutal religious persecution against Christians. Numerous churches and monasteries were destroyed by him. When Jonas and Barachisius, two brothers living in the city of Beth-Asa, heard that Christians had been sentenced to death and imprisoned, they immediately went to serve them and encourage them. However, before they could reach, nine people had already received the crown of martyrdom.

Meanwhile, Jonas and Barachisius were captured by the army. The judge asked the saints to obey the Persian king and worship the sun, moon, fire, and water. The saints replied, “True worship is to worship the eternal King, the Heavenly Father, who reigns in heaven and on earth.” Enraged by this, the authorities placed Barachisius in a narrow cell and urged Jonas to offer sacrifices to the sun, moon, fire, and water. When Jonas refused, they began to beat him with rods and clubs.

Despite the cruel tortures, the saint continued to pray and said, “O God of our father Abraham, I thank You. I ask You to make me worthy to become an acceptable offering to You. I reject the sun, moon, fire, and water, and I believe and profess in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” After this, the judge bound the saint by his feet and threw him into a pool filled with cold water.

After dinner, the judge called Barachisius and falsely claimed that his brother Jonas had offered sacrifices to their gods. Hearing this, Barachisius declared that this was impossible and spoke passionately about the power of the Lord God. The authorities began torturing the saint with heated iron rods and chains. They told him that if any saint tried to escape from the heated rods, they would consider it as a rejection of Christ. The saint courageously responded, “I am not afraid of your torture devices or your fire. I request that you use them on me quickly. A person who fights for God is full of courage.”

Infuriated by his words, the authorities gouged out the saint’s eyes and threw him into prison, where he was hung by one foot.

Later, they brought Saint Jonas, who had been in the pool. When the authorities mocked him about the previous night’s torture, the saint replied that he had never experienced such a pleasurable night in his life. They falsely claimed that Barachisius had abandoned his faith. The saint responded, “I know that he has already forsaken Satan and his angels long ago.” Without fear, the saint spoke to them about Jesus and the transient nature of physical life.

The executioners then cut off the saint’s fingers and toes, skinned his head, slit his tongue, and threw it into boiling water. However, when the boiling water failed to harm the saint, they lay him on a wooden slab, strangled him, and, with an iron sword, cut and mutilated his body to death. They posted guards to prevent other Christians from taking his remains.

Next was the martyrdom of Saint Barachisius. Although the authorities asked him to abandon his faith to save his body, the saint replied, “I did not create my body, so I have no right to destroy it. The God who created it will restore it to its original state, and He will judge you and your king.” Realizing that they could not break the saint through torture, they beat him with sharp thorns. After enduring cruel torments, like his brother, the saint received the crown of martyrdom.

These brave saints became heirs to the heavenly abode after enduring severe tortures. Upon learning of their death, Abtussiatus secretly took their bodies. According to the Roman martyrology, the day of their martyrdom is celebrated on March 29.
