Saint John was born in AD 304 in Asyut, Egypt. It is said that he was the son of a shoemaker involved in the leather and sandal-making business in Asyut. At the age of 25, he became a monk at a monastery in a nearby mountain. To test his humility, an elderly monk there often asked him to perform foolish tasks such as carrying water in a dry basket every day. Saint John, without complaint, carried out these tasks for an entire year. He lived with this monk for about 12 years.
At the age of 40, Saint John built a small cell on top of a large rock near Asyut, where he began living in severe isolation. He would not eat anything until sunset, spending all his time in prayer and meditation. On Saturdays and Sundays, he would only speak to those who came to him for advice, through a small window in his cell. His disciples set up a hospice near his cell, where they took care of those who visited. His miracles, prophetic abilities, and capacity to read people’s hearts were widely spread among the people.
Due to his ability to predict the future, he became known as the “Prophet of Thebaid.” When Emperor Theodosius was attacked by the self-declared ruler Maximus, Theodosius consulted Saint John about the outcome of the battle. Saint John prophesied that Theodosius would win without shedding blood, and indeed, it happened. Similarly, in 392, when Theodosius inquired whether he should take military action against Eugenius or wait for an attack, Saint John predicted that Theodosius would be victorious but at the cost of many lives, and that he would die in Italy. Theodosius lost nearly 10,000 men in battle but emerged victorious, and he died in 395, as predicted.
One of the miracles associated with Saint John was restoring the sight of a senator’s wife. Saint John never allowed himself to speak with or even see women. A governor’s wife, who had traveled from Lykopolis to meet him, could not get an audience with him. However, seeing her faith, Saint John appeared to her in a dream, offering her advice. This event was recorded by Evagrius, Palladius, and Augustine in their works on the care of the deceased. Palladius, who later became the bishop of Helenopolis, visited Saint John in 394, but when he realized that he could not meet him until the next Saturday, he left.
The next morning, Palladius, through an interpreter, introduced himself as coming from the Evagrius community. At that point, the governor Alepius arrived and asked Palladius to wait while Saint John went to speak with the governor. After waiting for some time, Palladius became impatient and decided to leave. Saint John, through his interpreter, assured Palladius that he would speak to him after meeting the governor. Palladius was amazed at Saint John’s ability to read his thoughts. After the governor left, Saint John explained to Palladius why he had given the governor priority and advised him to renounce the temptations of the devil from his heart. Saint John also prophesied that Palladius would eventually become a bishop, a prediction that later came true. This visit is still documented.
Once, a group of six monks, including Saint Petronius, visited Saint John. When Saint John asked them if they were walking the divine path, they answered, “No.” In truth, Petronius had concealed the fact that he was a priest. When Saint John pointed to him and revealed his priestly status, Petronius denied it. Immediately, Saint John kissed the young man’s hand and said, “My son, never deny the gifts you have received from God. Do not allow your humility to deceive you into doing wrong. We must never speak lies because nothing that is false comes from God.” Saint John also healed a monk who was ill.
Saint John gave various instructions to the monks about pride and arrogance, urging them to remove these from their hearts. He provided examples from the lives of many monks to help them. After three days of staying with him, they began to leave, and Saint John blessed them, prophesying the victory of Theodosius over Eugenius and his death from natural causes afterward.
A few days later, the monks learned that Saint John had passed away. He had known in advance about his death and spent the last three days of his life in prayer, refusing to see anyone. He died in a posture of prayer with his hands raised. His reputation for sanctity was second only to that of Saint Anthony. His contemporaries, including Saint Jerome, Saint Augustine, and John Cassian, held him in great esteem. Saint John is believed to have passed away around AD 394 or 395 in the region near Egypt. His feast day is celebrated on October 17th in Coptic churches.
