In AD 744, in the town of Frisia in the Netherlands, Saint Ludger was born. Due to his deep devotion to God, intellectual sharpness, and enthusiasm, he became well-loved by everyone associated with him. At the age of 14, he had the opportunity to meet Saint Gregory in Utrecht, who gave him the monastic habit. At the age of 24, he was ordained as a priest, and at 34, he received the priestly tonsure.
Saint Gregory was the first to teach Ludger (the summary of Saint Gregory’s life was written by Saint Ludger himself). In 767, he went to England to become a disciple of the blessed Alcuin of York. He lived there for more than four years. During this time, a man from his homeland murdered an English merchant, causing local resentment, and this led to a violent upheaval. As a result, Saint Ludger left England.
Later, in 775, he moved to Duenwerth to revitalize the work that had been initiated by Saint Lebuinus. In 777, Saint Alberic, the successor of Saint Gregory, compelled Ludger to become a priest. After this, Saint Ludger stayed in the town of Dokkum, where Saint Boniface had been martyred, and spread the Gospel throughout Friesland. Within seven years, he constructed many churches (including the famous church at Dokkum). He destroyed many idols there and converted many pagans to Christianity. However, in 784, the Saxon leader Widukind attacked the area, destroying many Christian institutions and persecuting all the missionaries.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Saint Ludger went on a pilgrimage to Rome. He stayed for nearly two years at the famous Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino. Later, he made plans for the future of a new monastery he would establish at Werden. It is possible that he also met Emperor Charlemagne during this time. In 786, when he returned to Westphalia, the emperor entrusted him with the spiritual affairs of five provinces.
Subsequently, Saint Ludger established his residence at Mimigardeford, a place that later came to be known as Minster. He followed the monastic rule of Saint Crodegang of Metz. Due to his piety, Saint Ludger was able to convert more Saxons to Christianity than Charlemagne had with all of his military power. Before long, he was appointed the bishop of Trier, and in 804, he was consecrated as the first bishop of Minster.
Saint Ludger preached the Gospel in Holstein and Westphalia. Because of his generous donations for the decoration of churches, Charlemagne accused him, and the emperor kept him outside his court for some time while he explained his charitable actions. However, this did not diminish Charlemagne’s affection for the saint.
Despite suffering from severe illness and pain, Saint Ludger continued to preach the Gospel until the very end of his life. In 809, while on a missionary journey in Billerbeck, Westphalia, he passed away. His physical body was laid to rest in the Benedictine monastery at Werden, which he had founded. Most of his relics are still preserved there. Since the ninth century, his feast day has been recorded in church calendars.
Saint Ludger is often depicted in various poses: standing with an archbishop’s staff in one hand, with one foot raised as if stepping forward, holding the model of a church in his hands, or praying with his hands raised.
