The small book True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin is a prophetic work that explains the mystery and meaning of devotion to the Blessed Mother. In this book, Saint Louis de Montfort reveals profound insights and hidden truths about devotion to the Holy Mother. However, it is not always easy for us to fully grasp the depth of his words today. For example, he says that the Savior, for as long as He lived in His mother’s womb, was a servant of the Blessed Mother. How can we fully understand the meaning of this statement?
After the announcement of the Blessed Mother’s pregnancy, the Savior, in His physical form, was revealed in her. While living in His mother’s womb, the Savior led a life that was completely centered around the Blessed Mother. This relationship could be described as the complete dependency of one person on another. From the very beginning of Christ’s existence, the word “Incarnation” has been explained in this way. The Savior chose to live His life in the womb of another being. The mysterious relationship He had with the Blessed Mother was part of His divine plan.
Through the Incarnation, God revealed His omnipotence. Even during conception, before and after the birth, God revealed His power by keeping His mother as a virgin. Everything about the Incarnation was extraordinary. Had God chosen, He could have arranged for the Savior to be born in a manner that was immediate after conception, but God did not do this. Instead, the Savior desired to remain in the Blessed Mother’s womb for the full nine months, to establish a special, mysterious bond with her. Simply put, He desired to be her servant and to depend completely on her.
At this point, one might wonder, what kind of relationship existed between the Savior and His mother? What kind of unity did they experience? This is an impenetrable mystery. We must reflect on the mystery of the Incarnation, where God took on human nature and became truly human. Just as we have both body and soul, so too did He. He was also a descendant of the first human beings, Adam and Eve. However, parallel to this, His human soul had a unique relationship with God. This relationship can be described as a bond strong enough to make Him part of the Holy Trinity.
When Jesus cried out from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” how can anyone explain that? Even at that moment, He was in a state of connection with God, yet He wished to experience the pain of separation and abandonment in His divine and human nature.
Here, yet another mystery is revealed. While Jesus was in the Blessed Mother’s womb, their union was complete, just as the union of the Holy Trinity is complete. Even though there are mysteries we cannot explain, we can understand them by reflecting on the divine unity between the Blessed Mother and the Savior. These mysteries defy comparison to any other form of unity, and they stand in opposition to two philosophies—pantheism and individualism.
Pantheism teaches that everything is divine, with no real difference between things. It teaches a unity where all things are connected as part of a single essence. Individualism, on the other hand, claims that each person is entirely separate and does not need to be united with others. But the Catholic faith rejects both of these views. It teaches that each person is unique but that true progress and unity happen only through connection with others. Through the grace of the Blessed Mother, theology and philosophy may one day be able to explain this profound truth.
When we contemplate the relationship between our Savior and His Mother, we are assured that we will uncover keys to understanding these revelations. Saint Louis de Montfort emphasizes that the mystery of the Incarnation contains all other mysteries. The Church prays for this mystery on every feast day, and we too meditate on it during the Annunciation and the day when the Word was made flesh. This day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the deep bond between the Savior and His Blessed Mother.
On this feast day, we are called to consecrate ourselves to the Blessed Mother, offering ourselves as her servants, and establishing a similar relationship with her. Just as Jesus lived in her womb, we too can ask the Blessed Mother to transform us into her humble children. We can pray to her to make us obedient and devoted, just as Jesus was to her.
