Saint Serapion was an Egyptian monk known for his profound scholarship, sharp intellect, and vast knowledge. He was a disciple of Saint Anthony and, in the early years of his life, served as a friend and helper to Saint Athanasius in the Egyptian desert. For a time, he taught at a school of scripture in Alexandria, Egypt, but later retired from this role to devote more time to repentance and prayer.
Saint Athanasius recorded that when Saint Serapion visited him, Athanasius shared with him events that had occurred in Egypt some time ago. Before his departure from this world, Saint Anthony left behind his garment made of hair for Saint Serapion as a token.
After being consecrated as the bishop of Môïse, a town by the Nile River near Diopoli, Saint Serapion rose to leadership in church matters. He was a strong opponent of the heretical Arianism, a theological doctrine that denied the divinity of Christ. For this reason, he became an ally of Saint Athanasius, who was a staunch opponent of Arianism, and was exiled by the Arian emperor, Constantius. Saint Jerome refers to him as a “priest” and also describes his close association with Saint Athanasius.
When the heresy of Macedonianism, which denied the divinity of the Holy Spirit, emerged, Saint Serapion strongly opposed it and even encouraged Saint Athanasius, who was in hiding at the time, to take action against it. Consequently, in 359, from his place of hiding in the desert, Saint Athanasius wrote four letters opposing this heresy, which were sent to Saint Serapion.
Saint Serapion himself also wrote a significant work against Macedonianism. In this text, he argued that the body is merely an instrument of the heart’s desires, whether good or bad. He emphasized that even evil people can sometimes do good, demonstrating his view that the soul is from God, but the body came through the influence of Satan. This belief stood in opposition to the Manichaean doctrine.
In addition to this, Saint Serapion wrote several other theological works and hymns, some of which are cited by Saint Jerome. One of his most recognized works is a collection of prayers and hymns called “Eucheologion”, which was discovered and published in 1899. This compilation of liturgical prayers, mainly intended for the use of bishops, is an essential resource for understanding the ancient Christian worship traditions of Egypt.
Saint Serapion’s influence extended beyond these writings; Saint Athanasius greatly admired him and frequently sought his counsel. Athanasius once wrote about the importance of the purification of the mind through spiritual knowledge, meditation, prayer, acts of charity, and continuous fasting.
Saint Serapion’s life, marked by prayer, asceticism, and spiritual dedication, stands as an example of deep Christian devotion. He passed away in Egypt between AD 365 and 370, living in hiding during a period of persecution. His legacy continues to be honored through his writings, his theological contributions, and his steadfast defense of orthodox Christian teachings.
