Saint Joseph, a carpenter by trade and a member of the lineage of David, was the one chosen by divine providence to be the earthly partner of the Mother of the Savior. His special role can be summed up in one phrase: “The foster father of Jesus.” In the Scriptures, he is portrayed not just as an ordinary man, but as a great figure who faithfully protected and cared for both Jesus and Mary, who were the priceless treasures of the heavenly Father on Earth.
The most sorrowful moment in Saint Joseph’s life may have been when he first learned of Mary’s pregnancy. However, during this time of trial, Saint Joseph manifested his greatness. He shared in the sufferings of the Father and played a crucial role in the redemption of humanity. For all times, he was a faithful witness to the divine birth of the Messiah from the Virgin.
The Scriptures do not mention the death of Saint Joseph, but he may have passed away before the public ministry of Jesus began. Historians believe that he died peacefully in the arms of Jesus and Mary. He lived humbly and unnoticed in Nazareth, and despite his silent passing, his legacy remained hidden in the later pages of Church history. It was only from the fifteenth century onward that devotion to Saint Joseph began to be established. After that, reverence for him grew significantly. Saints such as Bridget of Sweden, Bernardino of Siena, and Teresa of Avila spread devotion to him.
The Universal Catholic Church celebrates two major feast days in honor of Saint Joseph. The first is on March 19, which commemorates Saint Joseph’s role in the salvation of humanity. The second is on May 1, which honors Saint Joseph as the patron of workers. This day is a reminder of his intercession for the preservation of human rights and duties in society, and we ask him to intercede for social justice. Saint Joseph is the universal intercessor for the Church. He is also considered the intercessor for all those on their deathbeds, as he was with Jesus and Mary when he passed away. He is also recognized as the protector of fathers, carpenters, and those who fight for social justice.
Many religious communities bear the name of Saint Joseph, and many places of worship have been dedicated to him. These include locations in America, Austria, Baton Rouge Archdiocese, Louisiana, California, Belgium, Bohemia, Canada, Croatia (by order of the Croatian Parliament in 1687), Florence (Italy), Korea, La Crosse Diocese (Wisconsin), Louisville Archdiocese (Kentucky), Manchester Diocese (New Hampshire), Mexico, Nashville Diocese (Tennessee), New France, New World, Oblates of Saint Joseph, Saint Joseph Diocese, Sioux Falls Diocese, South Dakota, Syria, Austria, Turin (Italy), Tyrol (Austria), and Western Charleston (Virginia), among others.
Saint Joseph is the patron saint of a wide range of people and causes, including the oppressed, box makers, craftsmen, morticians, the sick, those who live in foreign lands, engineers, expectant mothers, families, fathers, those seeking a holy and peaceful death, homebuilders, refugees, workers, those in confusion, those fighting against communism, travelers, unborn children, the global Church, and various dioceses and cities. His intercession is sought for various social justice causes and for the preservation of peace and protection for the Church.
