റോമന്‍ അധിനിവേശത്തിലുള്ള ബ്രിട്ടണില്‍ ഏതാണ്ട് എ‌ഡി 415-ലാണ് വിശുദ്ധ പാട്രിക്ക് ജനിച്ചത്. വിശുദ്ധന് 16 വയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോള്‍ അദ്ദേഹം ആട്‌ മേച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത് ആക്രമകാരികളായ ചില അയര്‍ലന്‍റുകാര്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തട്ടികൊണ്ട് പോവുകയും അടിമയാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാല്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് അവിടെനിന്നും രക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും ബ്രിട്ടണില്‍ തിരിച്ചെത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. പിന്നീട് വിശുദ്ധ പാട്രിക്ക് തിരുപട്ടം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. ചുരുങ്ങിയ വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളിൽ തന്നെ മെത്രാനായി അദ്ദേഹം അഭിഷിക്തനായി. ഏതാണ്ട് എ‌ഡി 435-നോട് കൂടി അദ്ദേഹം അയര്‍ലന്‍ഡില്‍ എത്തി.
വിശുദ്ധ പാട്രിക്കിനെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റി നിരവധി ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ട്. അയര്‍ലന്‍ഡില്‍ നിന്നും പാമ്പുകളെ തുരത്തിയതും, മൂന്നിലകളോട് കൂടിയ ഒരു തരം ചെടി ഉപയോഗിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് പരിശുദ്ധ ത്രിത്വത്തിന്റെ രഹസ്യങ്ങളെ ക്കുറിച്ച് വിശദീകരിച്ചതും മറ്റും ഇതില്‍ ചിലതാണ്. അയര്‍ലന്‍ഡില്‍ കത്തോലിക്ക വിശ്വാസം കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നതിലും പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിലും വിശുദ്ധ പാട്രിക്ക് പരിപൂര്‍ണ്ണ വിജയം കൈവരിച്ചു. കാലക്രമേണ അയര്‍ലന്‍ഡിലെ മുഴുവന്‍ ജനതയും തങ്ങളുടെ വിജാതീയ ആചാരങ്ങളെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് സത്യദൈവത്തില്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുകയും ക്രിസ്തുവിലേക്ക് പരിവര്‍ത്തനം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. അയര്‍ലന്‍ഡ് ഒരു ചെറിയ രാജ്യമാണെങ്കില്‍ കൂടി ലോകം മുഴുവനും ക്രിസ്തു വിശ്വാസത്തെ പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിലും, പരിപാലിക്കുന്നതിലും വളരെയേറെ പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളിലെ ഇരുണ്ട യുഗങ്ങളില്‍ യൂറോപ്പു മുഴുവനും തിന്മ വ്യാപിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ അയര്‍ലന്‍ഡിലെ ആശ്രമങ്ങള്‍ പാശ്ചാത്യ രചനകള്‍ സംരക്ഷിക്കുകയും, ഉത്തമ ബോധ്യമുള്ള ഒരു കത്തോലിക്കാ രാജ്യമായി തുടരുകയും ചെയ്തു. കൂടാതെ കത്തോലിക്കാ വിശ്വാസം ലോകത്തിന്റെ മുക്കിലും മൂലയിലും അവര്‍ പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ചു. ഇതിനെ കുറിച്ച് കൂടുതലായി തോമസ്‌ കാഹില്ലിന്റെ ‘How Irish Saved Civilization’ എന്ന കൃതിയില്‍ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. വിശുദ്ധ പാട്രിക്കിനെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചില രചനകള്‍ ലഭ്യമാണ്. അതിലൊന്ന് ‘കുമ്പസാരങ്ങള്‍’ എന്ന് പേരായ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവചരിത്രമാണ്.
അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലുണ്ടായ സംഭവങ്ങളെ കോര്‍ത്തിണക്കികൊണ്ട് വളരെ എളിമയോട് കൂടി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെ വിവരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ ജീവിതസംഗ്രഹമാണിത്. അതില്‍ നിന്നുമുള്ള ഒരു വാക്യം ഇപ്രകാരമാണ്, “ഞാന്‍ ദൈവത്തോട് വളരെയേറെ കടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു, കാരണം ദൈവമെനിക്ക് നിരവധി ദാനങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്, അതുകൊണ്ട് എന്നിലൂടെ നിരവധി ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് ദൈവത്തില്‍ പുനര്‍ജ്ജന്മം ലഭിച്ചു. വിശ്വാസ-സ്ഥിരീകരണം ലഭിച്ച ഉടനെതന്നെ അവര്‍ക്കായി എല്ലായിടത്തും പുരോഹിതന്മാര്‍ അഭിഷേകം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു”.
“നിനക്കായി ഭൂമിയുടെ അറ്റത്ത് നിന്നുപോലും രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങള്‍ ഉയര്‍ന്നുവരും, എന്നിട്ട് അവര്‍ നിന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ വന്നു പറയും, ഞങ്ങളുടെ പിതാക്കന്‍മാര്‍ വ്യാജമല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നും അവകാശപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. ഭൂമിയുടെ അതിര്‍ത്തികള്‍ വരെ രക്ഷ വ്യാപിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് വിജാതീയരുടെ ദീപമായി ഞാന്‍ നിന്നെ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു” എന്നിങ്ങനെ പ്രവാചകന്‍ മുഖാന്തിരം ദൈവം വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ ഭൂമിയുടെ ഒരറ്റത്ത് നിന്നും ദൈവം വിശുദ്ധ പാട്രിക്കിനെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തുയെന്ന്‍ നമ്മുക്ക് പറയാം.
Saint Patrick was born around AD 415 in Roman-occupied Britain. When he was 16 years old, he was captured by some Irish raiders while tending sheep, and was taken as a slave to Ireland. However, Saint Patrick managed to escape and returned to Britain. Later, he embraced the priesthood, and within a few years, he was consecrated as a bishop. Around AD 435, he arrived in Ireland.
There are many legends surrounding Saint Patrick. Some of them include driving the snakes out of Ireland and using a three-leafed plant to explain the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Saint Patrick was highly successful in bringing and spreading Catholic faith in Ireland. Over time, the entire population of Ireland abandoned their pagan rituals, embraced the true God, and converted to Christianity. Even though Ireland is a small country, it played a major role in spreading and preserving the Christian faith worldwide.
During the dark ages in Europe, when evil spread across the continent, the monasteries in Ireland preserved Western writings and continued to be a beacon of Catholic faith. Furthermore, the Irish spread the Catholic faith to the corners of the world. This has been elaborated in Thomas Cahill’s work *”How the Irish Saved Civilization.”* There are also various writings available about Saint Patrick, one of which is his autobiography called *Confessio*.
This autobiography is a brief and simple summary of his life events. One of the quotes from it is: “I am greatly indebted to God because He has granted me many gifts, through which many people have received new life in God. As soon as they confirmed their faith, priests were ordained for them everywhere.”
God promised through the prophet, “Nations will rise from the ends of the earth for you, and they will come to you saying, ‘Our ancestors did not claim anything but the truth.’ I have set you as a light to the nations, to spread salvation to the ends of the earth.” In this way, we can say that God chose Saint Patrick from the ends of the earth to spread His word.
