Saint Heribert was the son of Hugo, the king of Worms. He completed his education at the Cathedral School in Worms and the Benedictine Monastery of Gorze in Lorraine, France. In 994, Saint Heribert was ordained as a priest and later returned to Worms as a prominent figure in the cathedral.
In the same year, Otto III appointed him as the bishop of Italy. In 998, Saint Heribert was appointed as the Archbishop of Cologne. At the same time, he served the emperor, Saint Henry, as well. A little later, he was appointed as the papal legate to Germany by the Holy Father.
Saint Heribert continued in this position until January 23, 1002, when Otto III passed away. It was during his tenure that he founded the monastery in Deutz. Many miracles were attributed to his name. One of the most notable miracles was when he prevented a severe drought, which is why people still invoke his name for rain during times of drought.
Saint Heribert passed away on March 16, 1021, in Cologne, and was buried in Deutz. During his lifetime, he was already venerated as a saint. In 1074, Pope Gregory VII declared Saint Heribert a saint.
