March 14:

Saint Matilda was the daughter of the mighty Saxon king, Theodoric. At a very young age, her parents sent her to the Erfurt monastery, where her grandmother, Maud, was the abbess. A person of great virtue, Saint Matilda was an exemplary figure, embodying all the virtues and serving as a model for others. In 913, her parents arranged for her to marry Henry, the son of Otto, a Saxon lord, and later the king of Germany. She stayed in the monastery until her marriage. Henry, a capable and God-fearing prince, was also deeply compassionate towards his people. In a short time, he successfully repelled invasions by the Hungarians and the Danes, incorporating their territories into his kingdom.

During this time, Saint Matilda devoted herself to overcoming her spiritual adversaries, becoming a good Christian and a respected figure in the eyes of the Heavenly Father. Through intense prayer and meditation, she sowed the precious seeds of devotion and humility in her heart. Visiting the sick, comforting the afflicted, serving the poor, and offering them good counsel were actions that brought immense joy to her. Even prisoners benefited from her charitable acts. Inspired by her example, Henry joined her in all her endeavors.

After 23 years of marriage in 936, God called Henry back to Himself. While he was bedridden, Saint Matilda would regularly visit the church, praying at the altar for his health. When she saw the people weeping and understood that Henry had passed, she immediately called a priest and began the funeral rites for her husband’s soul. They had three sons. Later, Otto, who became the emperor, Henry, the ruler of Bavaria, and Bruno, the Archbishop of Cologne, were her children.

In 937, Otto became king of Germany, and in 962, he triumphed over the Bohemians and Lombards, later being crowned emperor of Rome. Meanwhile, the two older sons conspired against their mother and took all her wealth. In response to this treachery, Saint Matilda distributed all her kingdom’s revenue to the poor. Eventually, the princes regretted their actions and returned all that they had taken from her.

Saint Matilda continued her charitable work with even greater zeal. She built numerous churches and five monasteries. Later in life, when she fell ill, she received the sacrament of anointing from her godson, William, the Archbishop of Metz. Twelve days before her death, during a journey home, William passed away. Afterward, Saint Matilda summoned the monks and priests of the area and performed a second public anointing in front of them. On March 14, 968, she passed away, having anointed her head with ashes and lying on a mat, resting in the Lord’s peace.
