March 12:

In 1523, in the ancient city of Gemignano in Tuscany, Saint Seraphina was born. She was often called “Fina.” The city of Gemignano is blessed with her memories, and the renewal of her memory is celebrated under the name “Santa Fina.” Saint Seraphina’s parents were a couple who lived in great poverty after leading a life of great virtue. Saint Seraphina was said to be very beautiful in appearance. Despite living in extreme poverty, she always made it a habit to share a portion of her food with those less fortunate.

She led a life of a nun in her home. Throughout the day, she engaged in tasks like spinning thread and weaving, while the majority of her nights were spent in prayer. When she was young, her father passed away. Not long after, her life became difficult when she succumbed to a deadly disease. Her hands, feet, eyes, and other internal organs became paralyzed, almost as if they were frozen in place.

Saint Seraphina lost her beauty and attractiveness, becoming a woman who was unrecognizable to those who had known her. For six years, driven by her desire to experience the suffering of Christ on the cross, she lay on a wooden plank, unable to move or turn. Her mother would leave her alone for hours at a time, either to work or beg for food, but Seraphina never complained. Despite enduring excruciating pain, she would lie down in great peace, often repeating, “It is not my pain, Jesus, but my desire to see You that causes me pain.”

A new problem then arose in her life. Saint Seraphina was left completely alone when her mother died. Apart from a loyal friend named Beldia, she was entirely abandoned by society, and it seemed certain that she wouldn’t live much longer. Visits from poor neighbors became rare. During this time, someone spoke to her about the great Saint Gregory and his sufferings.

This inspired in her a great respect for him, and she prayed to endure her own suffering with patience, just as Saint Gregory had endured his many illnesses with grace. Eight days before her death, when no one was there to attend to her, Saint Gregory appeared to her in a vision and said, “Beloved daughter, on my feast day, God will give you rest.” True to his words, she passed away on the feast day of Saint Gregory.

When her body was removed from the wooden plank where it had rested, it was found to be adorned with white lilies. The entire town of Gemignano participated in her funeral rites, and many miracles were said to have occurred through her intercession. It is said that as she lay dying, she raised her hand to embrace her friend Beldia, and her wounded hand healed Beldia’s injury. On the feast day of Saint Seraphina, March 12, the white lilies that bloom near Gemignano are still referred to as “Santa Fina’s flowers” by the local farmers.
