St. Marinus was a soldier and a devout Christian who served under the reign of Emperor Valerian (253-259) and his son Gallienus (260-268). He was not only a soldier but also a dedicated Christian. When a vacancy arose for the position of centurion in the Roman army, St. Marinus and another soldier both applied. St. Marinus was initially considered for the role, but seeing this, the envious fellow soldier pointed out the law that any new centurion must offer a sacrifice to the gods of the empire.

Upon hearing this, the emperor asked St. Marinus to pray to the gods and make a sacrifice. However, St. Marinus boldly refused, declaring his Christian faith and rejecting the offer of sacrifice. The emperor gave him three hours to change his mind, during which St. Marinus spent his time in prayer and contemplation of sacred writings with Bishop Theotecnus inside a church. After three hours, St. Marinus stood firm in his decision.

As a result of his unwavering faith, St. Marinus was subjected to severe torture in Caesarea Philippi, and after enduring this, he was beheaded.

During the time of St. Marinus’s martyrdom, St. Asterius was present. After the martyrdom of St. Marinus, St. Asterius, a high-ranking official, removed his distinctive senator’s robes and used them to wrap St. Marinus’s body and head. He then carried the body and properly buried it. For this act of devotion, St. Asterius was condemned to death as well and was beheaded in 260 AD.
