Saint John of Sahagún was born in 1430 in Sahagún, a town in the Kingdom of León, Spain. He received his early education from the Benedictine monks at the famous monastery in Sahagún. His father, Don Juan González de Castrillo, secured for him a church benefice—an income-generating ecclesiastical position—as a form of inheritance.
By the age of 20, John was granted the rights to receive revenue from four church benefices by the bishop of Burgos and the abbot of Sahagún, in recognition of his spiritual service. This reflected both the influence of his family and their recognition of John’s virtue. By the time he was ordained in 1453, he was authorized to receive income from about five benefices in Burgos. He served as a key official in the bishop’s household.
After the death of the bishop, John dedicated himself fully to celebrating the Holy Eucharist and preaching to the poor. He underwent a radical spiritual transformation, and using the income from just one benefice, he joined the University of Salamanca to study theology. His education prepared him to serve at St. Bartholomew’s College and to administer the nearby parish of St. Sebastian with great diligence and spiritual maturity.
Salamanca at the time was rife with divisions and crime. This environment provided John with numerous opportunities to preach repentance and spiritual renewal. After his sermons, he often offered individual counsel during confessions. He had a remarkable ability to understand the inner disposition of people, which helped him guide them effectively during confession. He was particularly firm with habitual sinners and those who approached the sacrament without genuine repentance.
He was also strict with priests who did not live according to their holy vocation. His devotion and fervor during the celebration of the Holy Mass deeply moved the faithful, and it is said that he was granted the grace of seeing the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. His prayers and spiritual practices attracted divine blessings, which flowed into his preaching and ministry.
In 1463, after falling seriously ill, John applied to join the Augustinian seminary in Salamanca. He took the religious habit on August 28, 1464, and soon became a teacher of novices while continuing his preaching mission. His efforts for reconciliation bore fruit—by 1476, his former adversaries signed a peace agreement. By then, he had become a beloved figure within his religious community.
At one point, while in Alba de Tormes, his life was threatened by two thieves sent by a powerful local noble whom John had criticized for his unjust rule. However, the thieves repented upon approaching John, confessed their sins, and asked for forgiveness. His strong moral teachings created enemies, particularly among those who felt condemned by his words.
It is believed that he died from poisoning. In 1479, Saint John predicted his own death, which occurred the same year. It is said that a woman from Salamanca, whose secret lover had changed his life after hearing John’s preaching, poisoned the saint in an act of revenge.
In 1601, he was beatified, and in 1690, he was canonized as a saint.
Because of his fearless preaching, major reforms occurred in Salamanca’s social life, earning him the title “Apostle of Salamanca.” After his death, many miracles were reported at his tomb, which became a popular pilgrimage site. His relics are preserved at a side altar in the Cathedral of Salamanca. He is often depicted holding the Eucharist in his hand, symbolizing his deep devotion to the Holy Mass.
