Saint Galdinus was born into the noble family known as the “Vavassors of La Scala,” a household that held great prestige in the history of Milan, Italy. As a young man, he was known for his purity and kindness—these were the jewels that adorned his character. After being ordained a priest, the Archbishop appointed him as his vicar and Archdeacon. From that moment on, a significant share of the responsibilities of church governance rested on the shoulders of Saint Galdinus.

In 1159, following the death of Pope Adrian IV, who was English by origin, Alexander III—a devout and scholarly man—was elected as his successor. However, five cardinals conspired together and, with the support of Octavian, initiated a religious schism. Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa), who was in conflict with the Holy Church, seized the Church’s income and interfered with the appointment of bishops. He also backed Octavian, who took the name Victor, as an antipope. But the city of Milan stood firmly in support of the legitimate Pope, Alexander III.

Angered by this, the Emperor launched a massive military attack on Milan in 1161. The siege lasted for nearly 10 months. Eventually, in 1162, the city had to surrender. In an act of vengeance, the Emperor razed Milan to the ground. In 1166, following the death of Archbishop Hubert, Saint Galdinus was chosen as his successor.

Pope Alexander III personally appointed him as Cardinal and his Vicar. The new shepherd offered great comfort to the grieving faithful. He also wielded his influence successfully across Lombardy to oppose the religious schism. All the Lombard cities signed an agreement to rebuild the city of Milan.

When the construction of the city walls was completed, the people of Milan joyfully returned to their city on April 27, 1167. Upon hearing this, the Emperor once again led his army to Milan. But this time, he suffered a humiliating defeat. In this campaign, regions such as Lombardy, Venice, Sicily, and most of Italy stood against him. Eventually, the Emperor agreed to a meeting with the Pope in Venice, where he vowed to end the religious schism. Thus, in 1177, a peace agreement was established between the Church and the Emperor.

Despite these turbulent times, Saint Galdinus tirelessly preached the Gospel and helped the poor. The poor always held a special place in his heart. Known for his sincere humility, he lived as if he were the least among the people of his diocese. He took the sorrows and struggles of others as his own and always found time for works of mercy. He strongly refuted heretical ideologies such as those of the Cathars and Manicheans.

Through constant prayer, he brought divine grace upon his flock. Like Moses descending from the mountain with a radiant face after conversing with God, Saint Galdinus too seemed to shine after such encounters. In public gatherings, his divine words, prayerful glow, and acts of charity could even soften the hearts of the most hardened souls.

Though physically exhausted, he continued to preach the Gospel with great intensity during Holy Mass. On April 18, 1176, while delivering a sermon, Saint Galdinus departed from this world. His passing brought sorrow to many. Numerous miracles have been recorded in his name. His name is specially mentioned in the ancient liturgical practices of Milan, in prayers, and in the Roman Martyrology.
