Historians believe that Saint Anicetus was a Syrian by origin, hailing from Emesa. He succeeded Saint Pius as Pope. Saint Anicetus served as Pope for about eight years, from 165 to 173 AD. His papacy witnessed disputes regarding the celebration of Easter. At one point, Saint Polycarp of Smyrna visited him, and the two discussed the matter of Easter. However, since they could not come to a common agreement, it is said that Saint Anicetus allowed Saint Polycarp to celebrate Easter on the day he was accustomed to.

Saint Anicetus vigilantly protected his people from the heretical ideologies of individuals like Valentinus and Marcion, who were sent by Satan to Rome with the intent of destroying the faith of the Christian capital. Marcion, who was a monk from Pontus, had committed a sin with a young virgin. As a result, his own father, who was also a bishop, excommunicated him from the Church. Hoping to be readmitted, Marcion came to Rome.

However, the authorities told him that he could only be readmitted to the Church if he repented and did penance under the bishop’s authority. Angered by this, Marcion began propagating his own heretical doctrine under his own name. According to Tertullian and Saint Epiphanius, he proclaimed himself to be a rational philosopher.

He even acted like a priest. Along with another heretic named Cerdo, who had come from Syria, Marcion established the initial elements of his doctrine during the papacy of Hyginus. According to their belief, there were two gods — one, the creator of all good things, and the other, the creator of all evil. Saint Anicetus offered the heretic a chance to return to the Church, provided he would guide the misled back to the truth.

Nevertheless, Marcion left behind many discontented followers of his false teachings in Rome, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Persia, and Cyprus. Pope Anicetus prayed fervently for the repentance of this sinner. Even at the time of his death, he was striving for this.

Saint Anicetus is mentioned in the Roman Martyrology and other similar records as a martyr. Though he did not shed his blood for the faith, he endured severe suffering and pain, thereby earning the crown of martyrdom.
