St. Seno, one of the early members of the Church, is regarded as a martyr by the great St. Gregory. However, prior to 1548, during the time of Bishop Levis Lipoman of Verona, the saint was referred to only as a bishop. Perhaps this is because his contemporary, St. Ambrose, in his writings to the successor of St. Seno, St. Syagrius, mentioned that the saint had a peaceful end. St. Seno, who lived during the reigns of Constantius, Julian, and Valens, was likely depicted as a martyr due to the religious persecutions they inflicted on Christians during that time. Nevertheless, in some sources, he is seen as a martyr, while in others, he is depicted merely as a bishop.
There are many arguments about the origin of St. Seno. Some say he was Greek, others claim he was Latin, and some suggest he was African. It is generally believed that he was consecrated as bishop of Verona during the reign of the heretic Emperor Julian in 362.
Historical records indicate that St. Seno converted many idolaters to Christianity each year. He actively opposed the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Jesus Christ and had gained power in the region with the help of Emperor Constantius. Additionally, St. Seno strongly opposed the heresy of Pelagianism, which denied the necessity of divine grace for salvation. Through his tireless efforts, St. Seno transformed the Church in Verona and increased the number of believers. He realized the need for a large church to accommodate the growing congregation, and the wealthy people of Verona supported him in this endeavor. Inspired by his example, the people of Verona became more charitable and generous.
The doors of the homes in Verona were always open to strangers, and the people would offer hospitality. During the Battle of Adrianople in 378, the Goths defeated Emperor Valens, and many people were killed or taken captive. Thanks to the charity of the people of Verona, many from nearby regions were rescued from slavery, cruel deaths, and hard labor.
St. Seno lived in great poverty and is said to have trained many people for altar service from his youth. On Easter, it was his custom to grant priestly ordination to selected individuals. St. Seno also consecrated many virgins to God, and he gave them the veil of sanctity. Some of these virgins lived in their own homes, while others lived in a monastery under his guidance, as recorded by St. Ambrose.
St. Seno prohibited any unholy or extravagant celebrations at the graves of saints during their feast days. He also showed great compassion for the deceased, forbidding loud wailing or interruptions of sacred rituals.
St. Seno’s hard work and dedication resulted in a peaceful death on April 12, 380. This day is also the day of his commemoration in the Roman martyrology. However, in Verona, two other feast days are celebrated in his honor: the day of his episcopal consecration and the day the new church he built was dedicated, which is celebrated on May 21 and December 6, respectively.
Two centuries after his death, St. Gregory recorded a miracle. In 589, a flood struck the region, and the water rose to the city’s gates. The people took refuge in the church of St. Seno, and although the water rose to the windows of the church, it did not enter the building, as though it honored the sacred space. The people prayed for 24 hours, and eventually, the waters receded. This miracle, among many others, increased devotion to St. Seno. During the reign of King Pepin in Italy, his relics were transferred to a larger church. St. Seno is primarily remembered for his endurance and suffering in the faith.
