St. Stanislaus was born in 1030. He completed his early education in Gniezno and Paris. After receiving the priesthood, he was appointed as a canon at the cathedral in Kraków, and he also served as the archdeacon and adviser there. Following the death of the bishop of Kraków, Pope Alexander II nominated St. Stanislaus as the new bishop of Kraków.
At that time, King Bolesław II, in an effort to strengthen his own power, launched a military campaign to Kiev. This action reduced the king’s popularity among the people and caused dissatisfaction among the nobility, who opposed his policies. St. Stanislaus, as the bishop, sided with the nobility, which led to a rift between him and the king.
Previously, St. Stanislaus had opposed the king’s autocratic rule. Once, King Bolesław abducted the wife of a Polish nobleman and kept her in his palace. No one dared speak out against this act out of fear of the king’s wrath. However, St. Stanislaus, without any fear, confronted the king and threatened to excommunicate him from the Church unless he changed his ways.
Enraged, the king declared that he would take revenge on St. Stanislaus. Additionally, the saint aligned himself with the nobility and opposed the king’s political policies. In his fury, King Bolesław branded St. Stanislaus as a traitor and sentenced him to death. Initially, the king ordered his soldiers to kill St. Stanislaus while he was offering Mass at St. Michael’s Church in Kraków. However, the soldiers, fearing God’s wrath, refused to carry out the order. The king, undeterred, entered the church himself, drew his sword, and killed St. Stanislaus. He then ordered his soldiers to dismember the saint’s body.
In response to this, Pope Gregory VII imposed religious sanctions on the country, resulting in Bolesław II losing his power. He fled to Hungary and sought penance for his crimes by joining a monastery in Osijek. In 1253, Pope Innocent IV declared St. Stanislaus a saint. He is one of the patron saints of Poland.
