Pope Saint Celestine was a Roman resident and a prominent figure among the clergy of the city. After the death of Pope Boniface, the decision was made to elect Saint Celestine as his successor. Thus, in September 422, with the approval of all the faithful and the prominent clergy, the saint was chosen as Pope. Saint Augustine praised Celestine for his elevation and firmly asserted that he would not support the actions of Antony, the Bishop of Fussala, who was engaging in violence and oppression.

Saint Antony had been a disciple of Saint Augustine. Later, Saint Augustine raised Antony to higher ecclesiastical positions, but this elevation led Antony to become a slave to pride and sin. This prompted a council in Numidia, where Antony questioned his own lifestyle. He tried to bring the Metropolitan of Numidia, who had condemned him, under his control. Hoping to sway the Pope to his side, Antony wrote a letter to Rome. Upon reading the letter, Pope Boniface ordered the bishops in Numidia to restore Antony’s old privileges.

When Antony returned to Fussala, he threatened to bring the army to force the local population to accept him as their legitimate bishop if they did not recognize him legally. After the death of Pope Boniface, Saint Augustine instructed Saint Celestine on the matter. Realizing the full extent of Antony’s offenses, Saint Celestine accepted the judgment of the Numidian council, deposed Antony, and appointed a new Metropolitan in Thessalonica.

Saint Celestine also wrote letters to the bishops of Gaul, including Vienna and Narbonne, urging them to correct the immoralities present in their provinces and to not deny absolution or reconciliation to any sinner on their deathbed. At the beginning of these letters, the saint wrote, “It is not possible for the limits of places or distances to confine my pastoral duties; wherever Jesus is revered, it is applicable.”

During this time, two letters from Nestorius, the Metropolitan of Constantinople, arrived in Rome, presenting teachings contrary to the Church’s doctrine. Pope Celestine also received a report from Saint Cyril of Alexandria about Nestorius’s heresies. Consequently, in 430, a synod was convened in Rome, where the writings of Nestorius were examined and his heretical views condemned. Saint Celestine decided to excommunicate Nestorius from the Church.

Within ten days, if Nestorius had not corrected his errors, a decree was issued to expel him from the Church. Saint Cyril was appointed to carry out this decree. However, Nestorius remained steadfast in his views. Eventually, a public assembly was convened in Ephesus, where Archadius and Projectus, as well as a priest, were sent as representatives of Rome to this assembly. They had the duty to assist Saint Cyril. In this way, Nestorius was expelled from the Church. Following this, Pope Celestine faced great challenges to reconcile the Eastern bishops who had been estranged from Saint Cyril.

Meanwhile, a British priest named Agricola, the son of the Bishop Severianus of Britain, spread the poisonous doctrines of Pelagianism in Britain. Before becoming a priest, Agricola had been married. Upon hearing this, Pope Celestine immediately sent Saint Germanus of Auxerre, his representative, to Britain. His zeal and sharpness successfully countered this threat.

Additionally, Pope Saint Celestine is credited by historians with sending Saint Palladius, a Roman, to spread the faith among the Scots, and to Ireland as well. Several hagiographers of Saint Patrick claim that it was Pope Celestine who entrusted Saint Patrick with the task of spreading Christianity among the Irish people.

After nearly ten years of serving as Pope, on August 1, 432, Pope Saint Celestine passed away and journeyed to the presence of God. He was buried in the cemetery at Priscilla. Years later, his relics were transferred to the Church of Saint Praxedes.
