In the small town of Paola, located near the Mediterranean Sea in Calabria, between Naples and Reggio, lived the couple James-Martotille. The couple prayed to God for a son, fully dedicating themselves to God’s service. In 1416, Saint Francis was born as the answer to their prayers. They named their son after Saint Francis, their mediator, as a result of their prayer. From a young age, Francis found joy in fasting, solitude, and prayer. When he was 13 years old, his father enrolled him in the Franciscan Friars at the Saint Mark’s Monastery. It was there that he learned to read and understood the basics of monastic life. He also gave up unnecessary talk and the eating of meat.

After spending about a year there, the saint, along with his parents, made a pilgrimage to Assisi. Upon returning to Paola, in 1432, with his parents’ permission, the saint built a cave near the shore in an uninhabited area, where he began to live in solitude. At that time, the saint was only 15 years old. His bed was merely the ground, and his food consisted of only plants. When he was around 20, two more people joined him.

Later, a few more people joined, and they built three rooms and a small chapel for themselves. There, they spent their time in prayer and worship. A priest from the parish would occasionally visit and say Mass for them. This was the beginning of their monastic community. By 1436, their numbers had greatly increased.

By 1454, with the approval of the Metropolitan of Cosenza, a large chapel and monastery were built at the same location. The cooperation of the people in this construction was immense. It is said that during the construction, Saint Francis performed many miracles. When the building was completed, he established a structure and discipline in his monastic community. Until his last days, the saint’s bed was either the floor or a simple piece of board. At night, his food consisted only of bread and water. On some occasions, he would go without food for two days.

By the time he was around 20, Saint Francis became a spiritual guide and a divine inspiration for those who sought him out. Through his simplicity, he embodied divine virtue. He adopted the characteristics that were the hallmarks of all monastic communities but placed the highest importance on humility. He gave his monastic community a name that reflected their spiritual calling.

Repentance, compassion, and humility were the foundations of Saint Francis’ rule. He advised his followers to fast regularly and encouraged them to avoid everything that was prohibited during fasting times according to ancient laws. His compassionate spirit became the symbol and the distinguishing mark of his monastic community. Humility was his most cherished virtue. Saint Francis preferred to live in solitude, separated from others, and serve God in this way.

The humblest of the monks in the Divine House petitioned the Pope for approval. In 1471, the Metropolitan of Cosenza officially recognized their order and its rule. On May 23, 1474, Pope Sixtus IV formally approved the order with an official papal document and appointed Saint Francis as the Superior General of the order. In 1476, Saint Francis founded a monastery in Paterno. Later, he also established a monastery in Spezia. In 1479, he was invited to Sicily, where he founded many more monasteries.

Returning to Calabria, Saint Francis established another monastery in the diocese of Rossano in 1480. King Ferdinand and his two children were advised by Saint Francis. However, because the king did not approve of the monastery being built without his permission, he began to persecute the saint. Nevertheless, Frederick, the king’s third son, was a close friend of the saint. Saint Francis had predicted that the Turks would conquer Constantinople, and on May 29, 1453, the Turks took Constantinople. He also predicted that the Turks would conquer Otranto, the major city in Naples.

Many prominent individuals have testified to the miraculous prophecies of Saint Francis. Bishop Lawrence of Grenoble, in a letter to Pope Leo X, testified that “The most holy father revealed many things to me that only God and I know.” Similarly, Charles Pirho, a canon from Cosenza, testified that Saint Francis had cured him of a severe toothache ten years earlier.

While Saint Francis was overseeing the construction of a chapel, two priests, whom he did not know, arrived to meet him. As per the custom, they tried to kiss his hand, but he stopped them, saying that he was the one who had been offering the Holy Mass for 30 years and that they should kiss the hand of the priest who had served God for so long. The priests were astonished at his humility.

Moreover, when one of the priests saw Saint Francis standing with his hand in the fire without harm, Saint Francis said, “All creatures must obey those who serve God with a pure heart.” This statement was recorded by Pope Leo X in the official documents for the canonization of Saint Francis.

It is also said that after the death of his sister’s young son, Saint Francis prayed for his soul and immediately had the boy’s body brought to his room, and through his prayers, the boy was miraculously restored to life. This boy later became one of his monks, Nicholas Alessio.

In Francis, many people suffering from the plague were healed. Saint Francis built many monasteries in France as well. On April 2, 1508, when Saint Francis was 91 years old, he passed away. In 1510, Pope Leo X declared him a saint. Until 1562, his body remained incorrupt in the church of Plessis-les-Tours. Later, the Huguenots destroyed the church and burned the saint’s body.
