Saint Eulogius was born into a family of the nobles in Córdoba, the capital of the Moors in Spain. He received his education under the guidance of Saint Zoilus, a priest who, along with 19 other priests, was martyred during the religious persecutions under Emperor Diocletian. Due to his goodness and knowledge, Saint Eulogius attracted many people to him. Not long after, he received priestly ordination and was appointed as the head of the church school in Córdoba. For his studies, he practiced asceticism and worked hard. His humility, simplicity, compassion, and love made him worthy of the respect and admiration of others.
In 850, during the time of Christian persecution, Saint Eulogius was imprisoned. On November 24, 851, the virgins Florus and Maria were beheaded and martyred. Six days after their death, Saint Eulogius was released from prison. In 852, many people were martyred, and Saint Eulogius encouraged them all, becoming a source of strength and comfort to the grieving faithful. In 858, the Metropolitan of Toledo died, and Saint Eulogius was chosen as his successor. However, he faced some obstacles before his consecration. Nonetheless, after his election, Saint Eulogius lived for only two more months.
Saint Eulogius came from an ancient Moorish family, and a young woman named Leocresia, raised in the Christian faith under the influence of a relative, secretly received the sacrament of baptism. When her parents found out, they pressured her day and night, attempting to make her abandon her faith, even beating her. Saint Eulogius and his sister Anulona, upon learning of her situation, advised her to go somewhere she could practice her faith freely. She secretly gathered the necessary supplies for her journey, and with the help of loyal friends, she was hidden away for a while.
However, the secret eventually became known. They were all brought before the judges, where the judge threatened to kill Saint Eulogius with a whip. But Saint Eulogius replied, “Nothing will be achieved by beating me because I will never abandon my faith.” Enraged, the judge ordered Saint Eulogius to be taken to the royal palace and presented before the king’s council. There, the saint began loudly proclaiming the gospel truths.
In an attempt to stop his preaching, the king’s council immediately decided to execute Saint Eulogius by beheading. While being taken to his execution, Saint Eulogius spoke against Muhammad, and one of the guards struck him forcefully in the face. In response, Saint Eulogius patiently offered the other cheek and allowed the guard to strike him again.
On March 11, 859, Saint Eulogius joyfully accepted his death. Four days after his martyrdom, Saint Leocresia was also beheaded, and her body was thrown into the Guadalquivir River. The Christians in the area later recovered their bodies.
