Saint Isidore, who is most venerated in Spain, is known as the most distinguished scholar of the Church. Saint Braulio says that God created the saint for this very purpose. Saint Isidore was born in the town of Cartagena, and his parents, Severian and Theodora, were among the most notable individuals of that region. They were examples of extraordinary devotion to God. Saint Isidore’s brothers, Liander and Flujiantius, later became bishops. Additionally, his sister, Florentiana, is also revered as a saint.
Saint Isidore was qualified for ecclesiastical service from his youth due to his exceptional goodness and wisdom. He helped his brother Liander, who was the Archbishop of Seville, in bringing the Arian Visigoths to Christ. Saint Isidore joyfully and eagerly carried out this heavy responsibility.
During the reigns of kings like Ricard, Liuba, Witric, Gundemar, and Sisebut, Saint Isidore continued his missionary work. After the death of his brother Liander in 600, Saint Isidore was consecrated as the Archbishop of Seville in 601. Through his patience and spirit, he restored discipline and peace within the Church in Spain.
In 619, during the council presided over by Saint Isidore, he refuted the heretical teachings of the Eastern bishop Gregory of Asphalia, who had followed the teachings of Eutychius, proving them wrong with evidence. Shortly after, Gregory himself embraced the Catholic faith.
In 610, all the bishops of Spain gathered in Toledo, and they elected the Archbishop of Toledo as the spiritual leader for all of Spain. At the Fourth Council of Toledo, Saint Isidore, although a humble member, was chosen as the principal president, not because of the prominence of his see, but due to his qualifications. His extraordinary abilities led to his being regarded as the leading scholar of the Church in Spain.
Saint Isidore preserved the fruits of his labors for future generations. He composed many useful writings, and his spiritual works deeply touched the hearts of all. His language was beautiful and humble, and the contributions he made to the era were invaluable. His writing style was concise and clear. Historians have noted that Saint Isidore was proficient in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.
Fourteen years after his death, at the Eighth General Council of Toledo, Saint Isidore was described as “the greatest scholar, the ornament of the Catholic Church, the most knowledgeable man, and a distinguished personality who guided future generations with his wisdom.”
