April 03:

In a place famous for salt wells, about four miles from Worcester, Saint Richard was born as the second son of Richard de Wich and Alice de Wich. In order to fulfill his vow of intellectual and spiritual purity, he distanced himself from worldly pleasures at an early age and made efforts to change himself, based on a firm foundation of knowledge and virtue. Saint Richard joyfully accepted every opportunity to serve others. In the unfortunate situation of his older brother, Saint Richard, with humility and dedication, worked hard like a servant and managed his brother’s farming and business matters.

After improving his brother’s situation, he went to Paris to complete his studies, which he had started in Oxford. Except on Sundays and during special celebrations, Saint Richard’s food consisted only of bread and water. After returning to England, he joined Oxford University to pursue a higher degree. Subsequently, he traveled from there to Bologna, Italy, where he studied Church law and became a teacher in that field. After teaching there for a while, he returned to Oxford, where, considering his high education, he was appointed Chancellor of the University.

At the same time, Saint Edmund, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was very pleased with the appointment and made Saint Richard his Chancellor, assigning him many important responsibilities. Saint Richard followed the example of Saint Edmund’s piety and devotion. He spent most of his income on charitable activities.

Some time later, when the Archbishop went to France, Saint Richard followed him. After the Archbishop’s blessed death in Pontigny, Saint Richard joined a Dominican friary at Orléans. There, he continued his theological studies and was ordained. Later, he came to the Canterbury diocese in England for clerical service. After Saint Edmund’s death, Boniface, who became the Archbishop, insisted that Saint Richard be appointed as the Chancellor of the entire diocese.

When Ralph Neville, the Bishop of Chester, died in 1244, King Henry III, who thought Robert Passelew, one of his faithful servants, was fit for the position, appointed him. However, the Archbishop and other Church leaders recognized that this person was unfit for the role, and they suggested Saint Richard instead. As a result, he was consecrated Bishop in 1245. However, the King obstructed his activities. The King confiscated all the money that Saint Richard had collected for the welfare of the poor. Saint Richard had to endure numerous persecutions from the King and his officials.

Two years later, his income was returned, but it was much less than before. Subsequently, Saint Richard informed Pope Innocent IV about his situation, and as a result, he obtained a decree from the Pope validating his appointment. This removed his major obstacles.

After this, Saint Richard doubled his devotion and faith. He made it a habit to visit the sick, bury the dead, and help the poor. Once, when one of his servants complained that his charitable actions were depleting his income, Saint Richard replied, “Then sell my vessels and horses.”

Even though a serious fire caused great damage to him, he said, “Perhaps this loss is God’s punishment for our cowardice” and continued his charitable work even more. With a spirit full of prayer, Saint Richard successfully taught the divine teachings to his followers. In response to all the insults he received, he responded with kindness. However, in matters of discipline, he made no compromises. Neither the Archbishop, the King, nor other Church leaders could stop him from punishing sinful priests. But he received those who repented with mercy.

When the Pope called for a holy war against the ancient Arab Muslims, Saint Richard, who was engaged in a sermon, fell ill with a severe fever, predicted his own death, and was prepared to meet it with love and thanksgiving. On April 3, 1253, Saint Richard passed away peacefully at a hospital in Dover, known as the “House of God.” At the time, he was 56 years old.

His body was taken to Chester, where it was placed in front of the altar of the cathedral he had consecrated in memory of Saint Edmund. On June 16, 1276, it was moved to a more honored location. Remarkably, a paralyzed person was healed, and three others who had been mentally ill were restored to their senses at his tomb, which prompted the Pope to investigate the matter by sending a commission. In front of this commission, many miracles were authentically proven. In 1262, Pope Urban IV officially declared Saint Richard a saint.
