“At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea” (Luke 1:39).
In today’s Holy Mass, we specially venerate the Blessed Virgin who bore in her womb the immortal Son of the Father, the Creator of the world, and the King of heaven and earth. The Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Mother brings to our memory several great truths and events. Immediately after the Annunciation, the Blessed Mother visits her relative Elizabeth; upon hearing Mary’s greeting, John the Baptist, who was in Elizabeth’s womb, was cleansed from original sin. Elizabeth praises Mary, saying, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
Today, Mary’s famous hymn of praise “My soul magnifies the Lord”, now part of the Church’s daily prayer, highlights God’s love. The encounter between Mary and Elizabeth has inspired many artists. For St. Francis de Sales, this visitation was central to his devotional life. Hearing the exalted title “Mother of the Savior”, and knowing the blessing John received through her visit, and the prophetic praise “All generations will call her blessed”, brought immense joy to the Blessed Virgin.
“And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name ” (Luke 1:46).
The beginning of Luke’s account of the Visitation is profoundly poetic. In it, we perceive the intense emotions of love and care. From the moment Jesus took form in her womb, the Blessed Mother was moved by divine inspiration. That inspiration was Jesus himself.
The Blessed Mother paid no heed to any justifications about the exhaustion such a difficult journey might cause. “Elizabeth is about to bear a child, and Mary’s child is the coming Savior; yet Mary did not consider it beneath her to care for Elizabeth.” For us, this selfless character trait of Mary seems almost unbelievable in its uniqueness.
She offered her greeting to Elizabeth, and when Elizabeth heard Mary’s voice, the child in her womb leapt for joy. Through Elizabeth’s words, we understand that even before His birth, the mere presence of Jesus gives life. First, the awareness of one child is stirred in the heart of another; then the first greeting – a child leaps for joy in his mother’s womb, recognizing the unseen Jesus and springing toward life.
But how did Elizabeth know about what had happened to the Blessed Virgin? How did she, who was only distantly related, come to know that her young cousin was the Mother of the Son of God? She knew this through the child in her womb. That sudden entry into life was marked by a leap of joy. If we put into practice the things the Blessed Mother has shown and taught us, we can confidently say our experience too will be akin to hers.
