Saint Ferdinand was born in 1198 as the eldest son of Alfonso, King of León, and Berengaria of Castile. In 1214, when Alfonso IX died, his son Henry was crowned king at the age of eleven. Henry’s mother, Eleanor, was his political advisor. Upon their deaths, the responsibility passed to Berengaria. When Henry died, Berengaria transferred the accumulated authority to her third son, Ferdinand. Thus, at the age of 18, the saint became king of Palencia, Valladolid, and Burgos.
When Don Álvares, a treacherous and cunning lord, caused trouble and civil wars in the kingdom, Saint Ferdinand overcame all these difficulties with his wisdom, courage, and his mother’s counsel. Though he captured Don Álvares, he later released him. Despite being a great king, Saint Ferdinand always obeyed and highly respected his mother’s advice. Following his mother’s counsel, in 1219, he married Beatrice, daughter of Philip, the German Emperor of Sobria. In this very joyful marriage, they had seven sons and three daughters.
Saint Ferdinand was very strict in governance and law enforcement. He quickly quelled rebellions against him. Nevertheless, he was very generous in charity. To ensure justice, he established a court known as the Royal Council of Castile and created a clear legal code with the help of the most competent lawyers. This legal code is still in use in the country today.
Although his father Alfonso claimed and attacked territories under Saint Ferdinand’s rule, the saint dealt with these matters fairly and sent his army to help his father in the war against the Moors. Saint Ferdinand tried to avoid excessive use of weapons in the war. He also founded many religious institutions and devoted attention to the restoration and renovation of numerous cathedrals, temples, monasteries, and hospitals. He was a popular king who did not impose excessive taxes on his people.
In 1225, Saint Ferdinand began his first attacks against the Moors by attacking Baeza. The following year, Aben Mahomet, an African descendant and king, ceded his territories to Ferdinand and recognized his sovereignty. In 1230, Saint Ferdinand brought around 20 areas in Córdoba and Andalusia under his control. Meanwhile, Aben Mahomet was killed for having aided Ferdinand, a Christian enemy, which Ferdinand took advantage of by attacking Baeza again and establishing an archbishop’s office there. Among his soldiers, Saint Ferdinand was a supreme example of piety. He fasted rigorously and prayed constantly. He wore a rough Roman shirt shaped like a cross. Saint Ferdinand granted many captured territories from the Moors to monastic orders and the Toledo archdiocese.
In 1230, while preparing to attack Jaén, Saint Ferdinand received news of his father’s death. Following his mother’s request, he also incorporated León, his father’s kingdom, into his domain. In 1234, he resumed his war against the Moors by attacking Úbeda. During this period, Ferdinand’s son Alfonso defeated a large army of about 1,500 soldiers under Abenhat, king of Seville. It is said that Apostle James helped the Christians in this war. Early in 1236, Saint Ferdinand’s wife Beatrice died.
Freed from the sorrow of losing his beloved, Saint Ferdinand fully brought Córdoba and Baeza under his rule and purified a large Muslim mosque there, converting it into a Christian church named after his mother. Following the advice of Blanche, his mother’s sister, Ferdinand married Dowager, a French princess, as his second wife. From this union, he had two sons and one daughter. Meanwhile, several small kingdoms accepted Ferdinand’s sovereignty. The deaths of his spiritual guide, Metropolitan Rodrigo, and his mother greatly weakened Saint Ferdinand. Still, he did not abandon his military campaigns. His attention turned to Seville, the most important and wealthy Moorish kingdom in Spain.
After a long eleven-month siege, on November 23, 1249, Saint Ferdinand captured the mighty Seville. He then thanked God and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Saint Ferdinand spent the remaining three years of his life in Seville. During this time, many territories came under his dominion. He was a fine example of a devout king and Christian warrior. Though very strict in his affairs, he treated others with compassion.
While preparing for attacks against the Moors in Africa, Saint Ferdinand fell ill for the last time. Through confession and other sacraments, he prepared to face death. In the presence of the archbishop and priests of Segovia, Saint Ferdinand rose from his bed, knelt on the floor, took up a cross-shaped relic, and kissed it with tears. Then he made his confession. Thus, on May 30, 1252, at the age of 53, Saint Ferdinand fell asleep in the Lord. According to his wishes, he was buried in the church of Seville under the figure of his mother. His body is still preserved in an altar there, where many miracles have been reported. In 1671, Pope Clement X declared Ferdinand a saint.
