Saint Germanus, the most famous saint of the Church in France, was born in Autun in 469. He grew up as a good God-fearing and knowledgeable person under the care of Scapilion, a priest who was also his relative. Even as a young man, Saint Germanus never hesitated to go to church regardless of bad weather. Having received priestly ordination from Saint Agrippinus, the bishop of Autun, Germanus was appointed the abbot of the monastery of Saint Symphorian, located in the suburbs of the city. That building was later converted into a monastery for priests.
Fortunatus, the bishop of Poitiers who had frequent interactions with the saint, recorded that in those days Germanus had the gift of prophecy and the ability to work miracles. One night, in a dream experienced by the saint, an old man appeared and handed him the keys to the city of Paris, saying, “God is entrusting the people of Paris under your protection. You must save them from destruction.” Four years later, upon the death of Eusebius, bishop of Paris, Saint Germanus was anointed bishop of Paris.
Even after becoming bishop, there was no change in Saint Germanus’ simplicity, which was evident in his clothing, table, and other household items. If one went to the church at nine o’clock at night, one would find the saint praying there until dawn. His home was a regular meeting place for the poor and beggars. Within a short time, Saint Germanus transformed the entire city. He converted King Childebert, who was once immersed in worldly pleasures, into a good believer. Moreover, following the bishop’s advice, the king established several hospitals and entrusted a good sum of money to Saint Germanus to aid the poor.
Once, when King Childebert was seriously ill and all physicians had failed, Saint Germanus visited him, stayed there the entire night, and prayed for the king’s health. The very next morning, as soon as the saint laid his hand on the king’s body, the king was completely healed. King Childebert himself testified to this. In return, the king gave the entire region of Selles to the church in Paris and to Saint Germanus. However, this good king did not live much longer.
After Childebert, his brother Clotaire, who came to power, did not have a close relationship with the saint. Once, when Clotaire was suffering from a severe fever, he was advised by someone to call Saint Germanus. Full of faith in God’s power and in his devotion, the saint wiped the painful part of the king’s body with the hem of his robe, and miraculously the pain subsided. From that moment onward, the king held great respect and honor for Saint Germanus.
Clotaire died in 561. Subsequently, his four sons divided France into four kingdoms, each ruling a separate part. Paris was given to Charibert. Charibert, however, was immersed in immorality and was a notorious libertine. He abandoned his first wife and took her maid as his wife. After her death, he married another woman while his first wife was still alive.
Saint Germanus repeatedly admonished the king against these wrongdoings but to no avail. Therefore, to prevent others from following the king’s sinful example and because of the king’s sins, Saint Germanus decided to excommunicate Charibert from the church. But divine wrath fell upon the king; his wife fell ill and died within a few days, and not long afterward, the king also died. After Charibert’s death, his kingdom was further divided among three brothers.
Paris became the combined property of these three. Saint Germanus did everything in his power to establish public peace in the city. Sigibert and Chilperic, fueled by their jealousies and the advice of their jealous wives, prepared for war against each other. Chilperic later fled to Tournai. However, at his wife’s urging, Sigibert was prevented from attacking Tournai. Despite Saint Germanus advising to either release his brother or face God’s wrath, no change occurred. As Saint Germanus had foretold, Chilperic was assassinated by murderers hired by his wife, Fredegund. Soon after, Chilperic himself was killed, betrayed by his wife’s treachery.
Even in his old age, Saint Germanus did not abandon his sharpness and devotion. Towards the end of his life, the saint doubled his piety. Because of Saint Germanus’ vigorous efforts, idol worship completely disappeared in France. It was under his advice that King Childebert ordered the destruction of all idols in his kingdom. Saint Germanus bravely continued his mission to convert sinners until his death on May 28, 576, at the age of 80.
After the saint’s death, it was King Chilperic who wrote a memorial note about him. He mentioned the miracles that occurred at the saint’s tomb, including the healing of a blind man who regained sight and a mute person who was given the ability to speak. In accordance with the saint’s wishes, he was buried in the church of Saint Symphorian. Numerous miracles reveal his divinity, which Fortunatus has recorded.
In 754, the saint’s relics were transferred from the chapel to the church of Saint Vincent, a day that is still celebrated with great solemnity. Most of Saint Germanus’ relics remain in the church of Saint Vincent, which is known as ‘Germain des Prés.’
