Saint Augustine was born in Rome. When news reached Pope Gregory I that the pagan tribes in Britain were refusing to accept the Catholic faith, he sent Saint Augustine, who was then prior of the Benedictine order, along with about forty Benedictine monks to England. Without considering the great dangers and difficulties that might arise in this mission, Saint Augustine and his companions reached England. They quickly experienced success in their gospel preaching mission there. On Pentecost Sunday in 596, King Ethelbert was baptized, and most of the nobles and people followed his example. Saint Augustine was a representative of the great Pope Gregory.

During Gregory’s time, except for the Irish monks, there was little knowledge about missionary work in the Western Church. The greatness of Pope Gregory revived this. The Pope desired to start a gospel mission among the pagan tribes in England. These pagans had kept the Christians there isolated from the rest of the Christian world.

In 596, the Pope decided to send an Italian monk who followed the newly established Benedictine Rule. Accordingly, Saint Augustine set out for England with a few monks. However, when they reached southern Gaul, some problems arose, and Saint Augustine sought assistance from the Pope. In response, the Pope appointed Saint Augustine as their abbot and instructed that the others must obey him.

With this authority, Saint Augustine successfully arrived in England in 597. They landed on the Isle of Thanet in Kent. Although King Ethelbert and the people of Kent initially refused to accept Christianity, they restored an ancient church dedicated to Saint Martin and offered it for Saint Augustine’s use. Shortly afterward, King Ethelbert was baptized.

Later, after discussions with the Pope, plans were made to move the church headquarters from Canterbury to London and to establish another province in York. However, due to certain events, these plans did not come to fruition. Nevertheless, the progress of Saint Augustine’s mission continued uninterrupted until his death between 604 and 609.

The only failure Saint Augustine encountered after arriving in England was his unsuccessful attempts to reconcile with the Welsh Christians and to bring them under his authority by adopting the Roman tradition for determining Easter and correcting some of their erroneous practices. Although Saint Augustine met with Welsh church leaders, they were angered when he did not stand up from his seat to greet them. Saint Augustine was also unable to bring Saint Bede to his side in this matter.

Saint Augustine was neither a heroic apostle nor a skilled diplomat, yet he accomplished a very great missionary work. He was one of the few who were willing to leave everything behind and go preach the gospel in distant places like Italy or Gaul. Saint Augustine died in Canterbury, England, in 604.
