പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ റോമിന്റെ അപ്പസ്തോലനും ദൈവസ്നേഹത്താല്‍ ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പ്രത്യേക വ്യക്തി-പ്രഭാവത്തിനുടമയായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധ ഫിലിപ്പ് നേരി. ഏതാണ്ട് 50 വര്‍ഷത്തോളം ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന ദൈവസ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ തീവ്രതയുമായി വിശുദ്ധന് തന്റെ പ്രേഷിത ദൗത്യം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചു. ഈ 50 വര്‍ഷകാലയളവില്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് സഭാപുരോഹിതരുടെ ആദ്ധ്യാത്മികതയെ നവീകരിക്കുകയും, മുഴുവന്‍ നഗരത്തിനും പുതിയ ആത്മീയ ചൈതന്യം നല്‍കുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ട് തന്റെ അപ്പസ്തോലിക ദൗത്യത്തിന് സന്തോഷകരമായ പരിസമാപ്തി നല്‍കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
റോമിലും, മറ്റ് പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെ കത്തോലിക്കാ സമൂഹങ്ങളിലും അവഗണിക്കപ്പെട്ട് കിടന്നിരുന്ന തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യം സ്വീകരിക്കുന്ന പതിവ് തിരികെ കൊണ്ടുവന്നത് വിശുദ്ധ ഫിലിപ്പ് നേരിയാണ്. വിശുദ്ധ ഫിലിപ്പ് നേരി റോമിന്റെ മാദ്ധ്യസ്ഥ വിശുദ്ധരില്‍ ഒരാളാണ്, മാത്രമല്ല അവിടെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ ജനസമ്മതിയുള്ള വിശുദ്ധരില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ കൂടിയാണ് ഫിലിപ്പ് നേരി. വിശുദ്ധന് യുവാക്കളോട് പ്രത്യേകസ്നേഹമായിരുന്നു.
വിശുദ്ധന്റെ വാക്കുകള്‍ ശ്രവിക്കുവാനായി യുവജനങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ചുറ്റും തടിച്ചു കൂടുമായിരുന്നു. ഒരു കുമ്പസാരകനെന്ന നിലയില്‍ അനേകരെ മാനസാന്തരത്തിലേക്ക് നയിക്കാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനായി. വിശുദ്ധ ഇഗ്നേഷ്യസും ഇക്കൂട്ടത്തില്‍ പെടും. തന്റെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളുടെ സ്ഥിരതക്കായി വിശുദ്ധന് ഒരു സുവിശേഷ പ്രഘോഷകരുടെ ആത്മീയ സഭക്ക് രൂപം നല്‍കി. മതപരമായ പ്രതിജ്ഞകള്‍ ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരു ആത്മീയ സഭയായിരിന്നു അത്. സഭാപരമായ പ്രബോധനങ്ങളും, വിനോദപരിപാടികളും ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്ന സാമൂഹ്യ കൂട്ടായ്മയിലൂടെ വിശ്വാസികളുടെ ഉള്ളിലെ ഭക്തിയെ ജ്വലിപ്പിക്കുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു ഈ സഭയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം.
ആനന്ദവും, ഉല്ലാസവും വിശുദ്ധന്റെ സ്വഭാവത്തിലെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഘടകങ്ങളായിരുന്നു. പൂര്‍വ്വ കാലങ്ങളില്‍ “തമാശക്കാരനായ വിശുദ്ധന്” എന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചിരിന്നത്. വിശുദ്ധന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ മനസ്സ് തുറക്കുവാന്‍ കുട്ടികളെ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നത് വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ലാളിത്യവും ആഹ്ലാദവുമാണ്. അഗാധ പാണ്ഡിത്യമുണ്ടായിരിന്ന ഫിലിപ്പ് നേരി കുട്ടികളുടെ കുസൃതികളില്‍ പങ്കാളിയായി കൊണ്ട് സ്വയം ഒരു കുട്ടിയായി തീര്‍ന്നു. യുവാവായിരിക്കെ വിശുദ്ധന് റോമിലെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ദേവാലയങ്ങള്‍ സന്ദര്‍ശിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. പലപ്പോഴും രാത്രി മുഴുവനും രക്തസാക്ഷികളുടെ ഭൂഗര്‍ഭ കല്ലറകളിലും, ശവകുടീരങ്ങളിലും സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗീയ കാര്യങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ച് ധ്യാനിച്ച്‌ കൊണ്ട് വിശുദ്ധന് സമയം ചിലവിടുമായിരിന്നുവെന്ന് പറയുന്നു. വിശുദ്ധ കുര്‍ബ്ബാനയും, പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനകളുമായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന്റെ അപ്പോസ്തോലിക ആത്മാവിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രം.

It was Saint Philip Neri who restored the practice of continual reception of divine mercy, which had been neglected in Rome and in other Catholic communities. Saint Philip Neri is one of the mediating saints of Rome, and he is also among the most popular saints there. He had a special affection for the youth.
Young people would gather around him to listen to his words. As a confessor, he guided many to mental transformation. Saint Ignatius was also part of this group. For the continuity of his work, Saint Philip established a spiritual society of gospel preachers. It was a spiritual society without any religious vows. The aim of this society was to ignite devotion within the faithful through a social fellowship that included religious teachings and entertainment programs.
Joy and cheerfulness were essential parts of Saint Philip’s character. In earlier times, he was described as the “jesting saint.” Saint Philip’s gentleness and delight inspired children to open their hearts to him. Despite his profound scholarship, Philip Neri participated in children’s mischief and became like a child himself. As a young man, Saint Philip visited important churches in Rome. It is said that often he spent whole nights meditating on heavenly matters in the underground tombs and catacombs of the martyrs. The Holy Mass and prayers were the center of Saint Philip’s apostolic spirit.
