May 25: വിശുദ്ധ ബീഡ്

Saint Bede was born in England. Among all the monks in the Benedictine monastic community, Saint Bede was known for his keen intellect and joyful nature. His writings are enriched with powerful theological insights. Based on the Holy Scriptures, he authored commentaries, theological treatises, and historical works. Saint Bede holds a highly esteemed place in the history of the Church. Through him, Christian tradition and Roman culture gained greater prominence during the Middle Ages.

Saint Bede is also known as the “Father of English History.” Even during his lifetime, his writings were publicly read in churches. Since he was not officially canonized at the time, the honorific title “Venerable” was added to his name. This became a lasting epithet used to describe him for centuries.

Saint Bede was someone who had a deep love for the Bible. He would explain the teachings of the Bible to others on a daily basis. As a true Benedictine monk, his life was marked by growth each day through prayer and service. Saint Bede died in Jarrow, England, on the day before the Easter feast.

During a night vigil, Saint Bede sensed that his end was near. He therefore received the necessary final sacraments and made his spiritual preparations. Then, while singing a hymn in praise of the Blessed Mother, he embraced his brothers, lay down on a rough cloth spread on the ground, and gently breathed his last while uttering the words, “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
