Saint Julia was a noble virgin from Carthage. In 489, when the city was conquered by Genseric, the king of the Vandals, she was captured and sold as a slave to a pagan merchant named Eusebius. Saint Julia endured the difficult tasks assigned to her with joy and patience, and even found delight in them.
During times when she was not required to work, she spent her time in prayer and reading spiritual books. Attracted by her punctuality and sincerity, her master once took her along on a journey to Gaul. When they reached the northern part of Corsica, he anchored his ship and went ashore to participate in a festival of idol worshippers. Julia, who openly despised the superstitions of idol worshippers, chose to stay away at a distance as she had no interest in such celebrations.
Felix, the governor of the island and a staunch idolater, asked who this woman was who openly disrespected their gods. Eusebius then revealed that she was a Christian. He added that despite trying with all his might, he had failed to make her abandon her faith. Moreover, he said she was a very hardworking and loyal servant, and he could not bear to part with her.
Upon hearing this, the governor offered to give Eusebius four of his best slave women in exchange for Julia. But Eusebius replied, “You could not buy her with all your wealth. I am even willing to give up the most valuable possession I have in this world for her.”
However, while Eusebius was drunk and asleep, the governor approached Julia and promised to set her free if she would offer sacrifice to their gods. Julia responded, “As long as I can serve my Jesus, I am free.” Upon hearing this, Felix felt deeply insulted. In a sudden rage, he struck Julia forcefully on the face and pulled out a portion of her hair from her head. Finally, he ordered that she be crucified until death. A few monks from the island of Gorgon took her body with them.
But in 768, Desiderius, the king of Lombardy, moved Saint Julia’s physical remains from there to Brescia. There, her memorial is celebrated with great devotion. Whether free or enslaved, rich or poor, Saint Julia was a woman who held on tightly to intense devotion and unwavering faith. She embraced all aspects of divine providence without complaint. She never hesitated to thank and praise God, turning every divine appointment she had to face into a path of goodness and sanctity.
