In 1381, near Spoleto in Italy, in Roccaporena, Saint Rita was born as the daughter of elderly parents. She showed an interest in religious life from a very young age. Although she wished to join the Augustinian convent, out of respect for her parents’ wishes, she married at the age of twelve. Her husband was a very cruel and wicked man. Saint Rita applied to join the Augustinian convent three times, but her applications were rejected because only virgins were allowed entry.
However, in 1413, due to her unwavering faith and persistence, she was finally allowed into the convent. It is said that after her repeated rejections, one night she prayed with deep devotion until God heard her plea, and miraculously transferred her into the convent through the locked doors. When the nuns saw her inside the convent the next morning, they understood it to be the will of God and admitted her. This story exists as a legend.
After taking religious vows, Saint Rita began living a very austere life. Her penance and care for others made her beloved by all. When the other nuns became sick, it was Saint Rita who nursed them. She also worked hard to bring lapsed Christians back to the faith.
In 1441, she had the opportunity to hear a sermon by Saint James della Marca. It was about the Crown of Thorns. After the sermon, when she prayed, she felt a pain on her forehead as though a thorn had pierced her. The spot later turned into a wound, and it was so unclean that she had to be kept apart from the other nuns.
When the time came in 1450 for a pilgrimage to Rome, her wound had dried. But immediately after returning, the wound reappeared. On May 22, 1457, she passed away in the presence of God in Cascia, located in Umbria, Italy, due to severe tuberculosis. She was canonized as a saint in 1900. It is recorded that many miracles occurred in her name after her death.
In fact, it is said that her physical body remained incorrupt for a long time. Her biography was written about 150 years after her death. Therefore, the facts regarding her life are not entirely reliable. Saint Rita is often depicted as an Augustinian nun praying before a crucifix, receiving a wound on her forehead from one of the thorns of Christ’s crown, or at times receiving a crown of roses from the Blessed Virgin Mary, or accepting the crown of thorns from Christ himself.
She is considered an intercessor for those in hopeless situations, as well as for those facing infertility or challenges in parenthood. In Spain, she is known as “La Abogada de Imposibles”, meaning the advocate of impossible causes, especially interceding for women facing difficulties related to motherhood. In Italy, she enjoys widespread veneration. She is especially honoured in Cascia and Spoleto.
