നോര്‍ഫോക്കിലെ വാള്‍പോളിലാണ് വിശുദ്ധ ഗോഡ്രിക്ക് ജനിച്ചത്. യുവാവായിരിക്കെ ഗ്രാമങ്ങളില്‍ സാധനങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ട് നടന്ന് കച്ചവടം ചെയ്യുന്നതായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ജോലി. നഗരങ്ങളിലെ വിപണന മേളകളിലേയും സ്ഥിരം സന്ദര്‍ശകനായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന്. കൂടാതെ നിരവധി കടല്‍യാത്രകളും വിശുദ്ധന് നടത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതിലൊന്ന്‍ വിശുദ്ധ ദ്വീപെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം വിളിച്ചിരുന്ന ലിന്‍ഡിസ്ഫാര്‍ണേയിലേക്കായിരുന്നു. അവിടെവെച്ച് ലൗകീക ജീവിതത്തില്‍ നിന്നും വിരമിച്ച് മതപരമായ ആത്മീയ ജീവിതം നയിക്കുന്ന സന്യാസിമാരുടെ ജീവിതരീതിയില്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് ആകൃഷ്ടനായി. വിശുദ്ധ കുത്ബെര്‍ട്ടിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ച എല്ലാക്കാര്യങ്ങളും വിശുദ്ധന് ആ സന്യാസിമാരില്‍ നിന്നും മനസ്സിലാക്കി. തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് ആ ദ്വീപിന്റേയും, അയല്‍ദ്വീപായ ഫാര്‍ണെയുടേയും എല്ലാ ഉള്‍പ്രദേശങ്ങളും സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ചു.
വിശുദ്ധ കുത്ബെര്‍ട്ടിനെ അനുകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വിശുദ്ധ ജീവിതം നയിക്കുവാന്‍ വേണ്ട അനുഗ്രഹം തനിക്ക് നല്‍കണമെന്ന് വിശുദ്ധന് കണ്ണുനീരോടുകൂടി ദൈവത്തോടു യാചിച്ചു. അതിനായി തനിക്കുള്ളതെല്ലാം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുവാന്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് തീരുമാനിച്ചു. തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ വിശുദ്ധ നാടായ ജെറൂസലേമിലേക്കൊരു അനുതാപപരവുമായ തീര്‍ത്ഥാടനം നടത്തികൊണ്ട് ഗോഡ്രിക്ക് തന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ പുതിയൊരു അദ്ധ്യായത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിച്ചു.
മടക്കയാത്രയില്‍ കൊമ്പോസ്റ്റെല്ലായും വിശുദ്ധന് സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ചു. നോര്‍ഫോക്കില്‍ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ വിശുദ്ധന് ഒരു ധനികന്റെ വീട്ടിലെ കാര്യസ്ഥനായി ജോലിയില്‍ പ്രവേശിച്ചു. അവിടത്തെ ജോലിക്കാര്‍ യാതൊരു നിയന്ത്രണമില്ലാത്തവരും, പതിവായി ജോലിക്ക് വരാത്തവരുമായിരുന്നു, ഇവരെ കുറിച്ച് വിശുദ്ധന് പരാതിപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും വീട്ടുടമസ്ഥന്‍ അത് കാര്യമായി എടുത്തില്ല. അതിനാല്‍ താനും അവരുടെ കുറ്റകൃത്യങ്ങളില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ടുപോകുമെന്ന ഭയത്തില്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് അവിടം വിട്ടു.
റോമിലും, ഫ്രാന്‍സിലെ ഗൈല്‍സിലും തീര്‍ത്ഥാടനം നടത്തിയ ശേഷം വിശുദ്ധന് താന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിച്ച രീതിയിലുള്ള ആത്മീയ ജീവിതം നയിക്കുന്നതിനായി ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിന്റെ വടക്കേ അറ്റത്തേക്ക് പോയി. ദുര്‍ഹാമിലേ ആശ്രമത്തില്‍ വളരെകാലം ചിലവഴിക്കുകയും, ധാരാളം സന്യാസിമാരുമായി ഇടപഴകുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ള ഗോഡ്വിന്‍ എന്ന്‍ പേരായ ദൈവഭയമുള്ള ഒരു ഭക്തന്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ഒപ്പം കൂടി. അവര്‍ കാര്‍ലിസ്ലെക്ക് വടക്കുള്ള വനത്തില്‍ പരസ്പരം സഹായിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വളരെ കാര്‍ക്കശ്യത്തോട് കൂടിയുള്ള സന്യാസജീവിതമാരംഭിച്ചു.
രാത്രിയും, പകലും അവര്‍ ദൈവസ്തുതികളുമായി കഴിഞ്ഞു കൂടി. രണ്ട് വര്‍ഷത്തിന് ശേഷം ചെറിയൊരു അസുഖം ബാധിച്ച ഗോഡ്വിന്‍ കര്‍ത്താവില്‍ അന്ത്യനിദ്ര പ്രാപിച്ചു. തന്റെ സഹചാരിയെ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട വിശുദ്ധന് വീണ്ടും ജെറൂസലേമിലേക്കൊരു തീര്‍ത്ഥാടനം നടത്തി. തിരിച്ചു വന്നതിനു ശേഷം കുറച്ച് കാലം ഇപ്പോള്‍ വിറ്റ്‌ബി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന സ്ട്രേനെഷാല്‍ച്ചില്‍ ഏകാന്തജീവിതം നയിച്ചു. ഒരു വര്‍ഷവും കുറച്ച് മാസങ്ങളും അവിടെ ചിലവഴിച്ചതിന് ശേഷം ഫിന്‍ക്ലി എന്ന മരുഭൂമിയിലേക്ക് പോയി. വിശുദ്ധ സ്നാപകയോഹന്നാനും, വിശുദ്ധ കുത്ബെര്‍ട്ടുമായിരുന്നു ഗോഡ്രിക്കിന്റെ മാതൃകകള്‍.
അവിടത്തെ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ജീവിതരീതികള്‍ അനുകരിക്കേണ്ടതിലും ഉപരിയായി ആദരിക്കേണ്ടവയായിരുന്നു. മനപാഠമാക്കിയിട്ടുള്ള സങ്കീര്‍ത്തങ്ങളും, പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനകളും ആവര്‍ത്തിച്ച് കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം ദൈവത്തെ മഹത്വപ്പെടുത്തി. വിശുദ്ധന് പാതിരാത്രി മുതല്‍ നേരം വെളുക്കുന്നത് വരെ പതിവായി ചൊല്ലുമായിരുന്നു. ദൈവവുമായിട്ടുള്ള സംവാദത്തിന്റെ കാര്യത്തില്‍ വളരെയധികം അനുഭവസമ്പത്തുള്ളവനായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന്. രോഗബാധയും, അള്‍സറും മൂലമുള്ള അതിശക്തമായ വേദനകള്‍ക്കിടയിലും വിശുദ്ധന് കാണിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ക്ഷമാശക്തി എടുത്ത് പറയേണ്ടതാണ്.
മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ പ്രശംസയും, കീര്‍ത്തിയും നേടിതരുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് പരമാവധി ഒളിച്ചുവെച്ചു. മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ തന്നെ കാണുന്നതോ, സംസാരിക്കുന്നതോ വിശുദ്ധന് ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നില്ല. എല്ലാതരത്തിലുള്ള അഹങ്കാരങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും, പൊങ്ങച്ചങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും വിശുദ്ധന് അകന്ന് നിന്നു. താന്‍ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പാപിയും, സന്യാസജീവിതത്തിന് യോജിക്കാത്തവനും, മടിയനും, അഹങ്കാരിയുമൊക്കെയായാണ് വിശുദ്ധന് തന്നെ തന്നെ സ്വയം പരിഗണിച്ചിരുന്നത്. തനിക്ക് സഹായങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നവരേയും വിശുദ്ധന് ശകാരിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ എത്രമാത്രം വിശുദ്ധന് തന്നെതന്നെ എളിയവനാക്കിയോ, അത്രമാത്രം ദൈവം വിശുദ്ധനെ അത്ഭുതകരമായ സമ്മാനങ്ങളാല്‍ ഉന്നതനാക്കി.
തന്റെ മരണത്തിന് മുന്‍പ് നിരവധി വര്‍ഷങ്ങളോളം വിശുദ്ധന് രോഗബാധിതനായി ശയ്യാവലംബിയായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശരീരം മരിച്ചപോലെയായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നാവ് ത്രീത്വൈക ദൈവത്തെ എപ്പോഴും ഉച്ചരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നതായി ഇക്കാലയളവില്‍ വിശുദ്ധനെ സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ച ന്യൂബ്രിഡ്ജിലെ വില്ല്യം പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഏതാണ്ട് 63 വര്‍ഷത്തോളം ഈ മരുഭൂമിയില്‍ ജീവിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം1170 മെയ് 21ന് അദ്ദേഹം കര്‍ത്താവില്‍ അന്ത്യനിദ്ര പ്രാപിച്ചു.
ഹെന്രി രണ്ടാമന്റെ ഭരണകാലത്തായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന് മരണപ്പെടുന്നത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭൗതീകശരീരം വിശുദ്ധ സ്നാപകയോഹന്നാന്റെ ദേവാലയത്തില്‍ അടക്കം ചെയ്തു. ഗോഡ്രിക്ക് വിശുദ്ധനാണെന്നുള്ളതിനു നിരവധി അത്ഭുതങ്ങള്‍ സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിക്കുന്നു. ദുര്‍ഹാമിലെ മെത്രാനായിരുന്ന ഹുഗ് പിഡ്സിയുടെ സഹോദരനായിരുന്ന റിച്ചാര്‍ഡ് വിശുദ്ധ ഗോഡ്രിക്കിന്റെ സ്മരണാര്‍ത്ഥം ഒരു ചെറിയ ദേവാലയം പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
Saint Godric was born in Walpole, Norfolk. In his youth, he worked as a traveling merchant, carrying goods from village to village. He was a frequent visitor to market fairs in various towns. He also undertook many sea voyages, one of which was to Lindisfarne, which he called the Holy Island. There, he was drawn to the way of life of monks who had renounced worldly living to lead a religious and spiritual life. He learned everything about Saint Cuthbert from those monks. Later, he visited all the interior regions of that island and the nearby island of Farne.
Moved by the life of Saint Cuthbert, Godric tearfully prayed to God to grant him the grace to lead a holy life like Cuthbert. He decided to renounce everything he owned. Then, embarking on a penitential pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Jerusalem, Godric began a new chapter in his life.
On his return journey, he also visited Compostela. After returning to Norfolk, Godric took up a job as a steward in the house of a wealthy man. However, the workers there were undisciplined and often skipped work. Though Godric reported this, the master did not take any action. Fearing that he might be drawn into their wrongdoings, Godric left the job.
After making pilgrimages to Rome and Saint Gilles in France, he traveled to the northernmost part of England to lead the kind of spiritual life he had long desired. A devout man named Godwin, who had spent a long time in the monastery at Durham and had interacted with many monks, joined Godric. Together, they began a strict hermitic life in the forests north of Carlisle, helping each other in their spiritual journey.
They spent their days and nights in the praise of God. After two years, Godwin fell ill and passed away in the Lord. After losing his companion, Godric made another pilgrimage to Jerusalem. On returning, he spent some time in solitude in Streaneshalch, now known as Whitby. After living there for over a year, he moved to the wilderness of Finchale. Saint John the Baptist and Saint Cuthbert were the models for his life.
His way of life there was not only to be imitated but also held in high regard. He glorified God by repeatedly reciting memorized psalms and prayers. It was his custom to recite them continuously from midnight until dawn. He had a profound experience in his conversations with God. Despite suffering from illness and severe pain caused by ulcers, the patience and endurance he demonstrated are particularly noteworthy.
Godric tried to hide as much as possible from others’ praise and fame. He did not like being seen or spoken to by others. He kept himself away from all forms of pride and arrogance. He considered himself the greatest sinner, unworthy of monastic life, lazy, and proud. He even rebuked those who helped him. However, the more he humbled himself, the more God elevated him with wondrous gifts.
For many years before his death, Godric was bedridden due to illness. Although his body seemed lifeless, his tongue was always praising the Triune God, as noted by William of Newburgh, who visited him during that time. After living in the wilderness for about 63 years, he passed away in the Lord on May 21, 1170.
He died during the reign of King Henry II. His body was buried in the Church of Saint John the Baptist. Many miracles testify to the sanctity of Saint Godric. Richard, the brother of Hugh Pudsey, the Bishop of Durham, built a small church in memory of Saint Godric.
