Saint Peter Celestine was born in Apulia in 1221. His parents were people of deep love and showed compassion to the poor to the best of their ability. After the death of his father, even though his mother had eleven other children, seeing Peter’s extraordinary devotion and inclination, she gave him a good education. As per his desire, Peter ended his formal education at the age of 20 and began a solitary life in a small underground room in a mountainous region.
He lived in this narrow room for about three years. Later, in Rome, Peter received the ordination to priesthood. In 1246, he returned to Abruzzo and started living in a cave on Mount Morrone near Sulmona, where he spent nearly five years. During this period, he faced many internal trials and temptations. On some occasions, he experienced illusions during sleep at night, which deeply discouraged him and even brought him to the verge of abandoning his monastic life.
However, his confessor advised him that all these were trials from Satan and gave him courage. Subsequently, Peter decided to seek the Pope’s counsel on this matter and set out to Rome. But on the way, he had a divine vision of a holy man who advised him to return to his cell and offer Holy Mass daily. Peter obeyed and followed this advice. In 1251, he went with two companions to Mount Majella, built a small hermitage hut using branches and leaves, and joyfully continued their monastic life there. Though they occasionally faced demonic temptations, they overcame all of them through faith.
Even though many people came to him seeking discipleship, impressed by Peter’s exemplary life, he sent them away, stating he was not capable of leading others. Yet, due to his immense humility, he allowed a few truly devout individuals to live with him. Peter spent most of his nights in prayer. During the day, he found time to copy holy scriptures. He completely abstained from meat. Except on Sundays, Peter usually fasted on all other days.
On every Friday, his meal consisted only of bread and water. He wore a rough garment made from horsehair and had a chain made of iron around his waist. His bed was simply the bare floor or a wooden plank. Even during his fasting periods, except on Wednesdays and Fridays, he gave spiritual advice to the faithful. Peter gathered his followers and established a monastic community, which received papal approval in 1274 from Pope Gregory X.
The monastic rules of Saint Benedict were followed in his community. The monastic congregation founded by Saint Peter Celestine grew rapidly, and by the end of his life, there were about 36 monasteries and around 600 monks and nuns in his congregation. After the death of Pope Nicholas IV, the Holy See remained vacant for almost two years and three months. Finally, the cardinals gathered in Perugia and unanimously elected Peter Celestine as the successor to Nicholas IV.
When Peter heard this news, he was bewildered and tried to convince them that he was unworthy of the position, but to no avail. He was consecrated as the Bishop of Rome on August 29 in the cathedral of Aquila in the presence of kings from Hungary and Naples, many cardinals, and royal princes, taking the name Celestine V.
From that time, his monks came to be known as the Celestines. King Charles of Naples encouraged him to come to the capital to solve some ecclesiastical issues and to make appointments to some vacant church positions. However, some of the new pope’s actions caused displeasure among many cardinals. Even while being Pope, Peter continued to live a monastic lifestyle amid the grandeur of the papacy.
To spiritually prepare for Christmas, Peter temporarily handed over the responsibilities of the Church to three cardinals. This decision invited more criticism against him. Due to the increasing criticisms and his deep desire for monastic life, Peter was prompted to renounce the papacy. He discussed the matter with Cardinal Benedict Caetani, who was well-versed in Canon Law, and on December 13, 1294, in the presence of the king of Naples and other dignitaries, Peter formally renounced the papacy and sought God’s forgiveness for his action.
Cardinal Benedict Caetani succeeded him as Pope. There were mixed opinions about Peter’s resignation. Dante considered it a cowardly act. However, Petrarch described it as a courageous act of self-emptying.
Peter soon returned to his hermitage in Morrone. But some who were dissatisfied with the actions and strictness of the new pope alleged that Pope Boniface had usurped the papacy from Peter. Fearing that the divine aura of Peter would attract crowds around his hermitage and that others might use him as a tool against the Pope, thereby causing confusion in the Church, Pope Boniface assigned the king of Naples the task of sending Peter to Rome. Realizing this, Peter attempted to cross the Adriatic Sea by boat.
However, due to adverse wind conditions, he was captured near the port of Vieste and handed over to Pope Boniface by the king of Naples. The pope kept Peter in his palace for a while. Moved by Peter’s humility, some requested the pope to free him and allow him to continue his monastic life. But fearing it would be dangerous, Boniface imprisoned Peter in the castle of Fumone.
Despite enduring many insults and hardships there, historians note that not a single complaint ever came from Peter’s mouth. He spent his days there in praise of God and prayer. After participating in the Holy Mass with extraordinary devotion on a Sunday in 1296, Peter reportedly revealed to his guard that he would die before the end of that week.
Soon, he developed a severe fever. On Sunday, May 19 of the same year, at the age of 75, Peter entered eternal rest in the Lord. Pope Boniface and other cardinals participated in his funeral, and he was buried in Ferentino. Later, his remains were transferred to Aquila and kept in the Celestine Church near the city. It is recorded that many miracles occurred there. In 1313, Pope Clement V officially canonized Peter Celestine as a saint.
