Saint John I, who was the Pope, was a native of Tuscany in Italy. He was a blessed man who was fortunate to glorify the majesty of God not only during his lifetime but also after his death. At that time, Theodoric was the ruler of Italy. Although peace was restored between the Eastern and Western regions, Theodoric viewed this with suspicion. Moreover, he was a follower of the heretical doctrine of Arianism, which denied the divinity of Jesus.

Meanwhile, Emperor Justin reinstated laws against the heretics, took control of churches under their rule, and banned heretics from holding public offices. These actions led many heretics, including Arians, to be prompted to convert from their erroneous beliefs.

Angered by these measures taken by Emperor Justin, Theodoric summoned Saint John to Ravenna and asked him to lead a delegation to the emperor with demands such as halting the persecution and allowing those who had been forcibly converted from Arianism to return to it. At first, the saint refused this request. However, fearing the king’s wrath might fall upon Western Catholics, he agreed. Yet, he bravely told the king that he would not ask the emperor to allow the reconversion of those who had embraced the faith.

He arrived in Constantinople shortly before Easter in 526. Saint John I was the first Pope to travel outside of Italy, and the reception he received in Constantinople surpassed even his dreams. The entire city’s inhabitants met the saint near the twelfth milestone of the empire.

A long procession of priests holding lit candles and crosses led the welcome. The emperor himself bowed in full prostration before the Holy Pope. On Easter Day, Saint John celebrated the Holy Mass in the Latin tradition at the Hagia Sophia Church, seated in a place higher than the Patriarch’s throne. They greatly honored him, even allowing him to place the traditional Easter crown on Emperor Justin’s head.

After discussions with the emperor as the representative of Theodoric, the saint began his return journey to Ravenna. However, Theodoric, consumed by jealousy over the grand reception the Pope had received in the East, became enraged. The king accused Saint John of failing his mission since he had not secured all of his demands from the emperor and forbade him from leaving Ravenna.

Despite being elderly, none of the petitions that Pope John submitted before the king bore any fruit. Not long after, he fell ill and passed away in the Lord. His mortal remains were initially buried outside the city wall. Later, on May 27, 526, his body was exhumed and brought to Rome, where it was interred in the center of St. Peter’s Basilica.
