Saint Pascal Baylon, the mediator of organizations and congresses of the Holy Mass, was born on Pentecost day in 1540 in Torre Hormosa, Aragon, Spain. In Spanish, the feast of Pentecost is known as the “Passover of the Holy Spirit.” Therefore, the name Pascal was given to the child. His devout parents first taught him the words Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. It is said that on the day his mother first took him to church, he spent the entire time gazing at the tabernacle. The love he would later have for the tabernacle was evident even in that first visit.
From the age of eight, he began to herd his father’s goats. On his staff, there was a carving of a figure of the Virgin Mary. While tending the goats, his thoughts often turned to the tabernacle in the parish church. When the goats reached the grazing spot, his staff would be stuck firmly in the ground—this was his little church.
Day after day, Pascal would attend the Holy Mass. Once, while tending the goats, he heard the bell for the Holy Mass. Filled with deep devotion, he prayed, “Lord, let me see You.” Immediately, Pascal saw a brilliant light and a golden host rising above the tabernacle. This vision led Pascal to join the Franciscan order.
As a friar, his life was exemplary. He treated the poor as if they were Christ himself. The head of the monastery once remarked, “I have never seen anyone so gentle and yet so hard-working. He is kind to others but works hardest of all on himself.”
Many times, he was seen in a state of ecstasy before the tabernacle. Because of his devotion to serving the Divine Liturgy, on some days he assisted in the Mass eight to ten times. After experiencing disrespect from the Huguenots in France toward the Holy Mass, Pascal’s devotion to divine mercy grew even stronger when he returned from France. On Pentecost day in 1592, at the main Divine Liturgy in the monastery, when the host was elevated, Pascal’s soul is said to have ascended to heaven along with the divine sacrifice.
