In 1330, Saint John was born in Nepomuk, a small town in Bohemia. His parents believed that he was born as a result of their prayers. Immediately after his birth, John’s life was in danger due to a fatal illness. However, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and their deep faith, he was miraculously healed. In gratitude for this, his parents dedicated him to the service of God. They also ensured that he received the best education. Every morning, John would go to the nearby monastery and participate in more than one Holy Mass.
After completing his primary education, he went to a town called Staže to study Latin. He later joined the University of Prague, where he studied philosophy, theology, and canon law. He earned high degrees in both theology and canon law. From a young age, John’s greatest aspiration was to become a priest.
Later, he withdrew from his studies and the city for about a month to live a solitary life of prayer and fasting in preparation for a deeper spiritual life. His bishop personally ordained him as a priest and appointed him to the parish of ‘Our Lady of Tein’. Soon, the entire city gathered to listen to him. Thousands began to flock to his parish to hear his sermons.
In 1378, Emperor Charles IV died in Prague. His son, Wenceslaus, succeeded him. At the time of his accession, Wenceslaus was only sixteen years old. He soon fell into a life of moral corruption, power, and flattery. Wenceslaus became synonymous with laziness and drunkenness. Having heard of Saint John’s fame, he requested him to preach repentance in his capital. John knew how dangerous this mission was, but still accepted it joyfully and began to preach.
Very soon, John became loved by all, including the emperor. As a result, the emperor offered him the position of bishop of Leitoměřice, but John refused it. Later, he was offered a provostship near the bishopric of Vyšehrad, which he also declined. Instead, he was entrusted with overseeing the emperor’s charitable works. This gave John opportunities to help the poor and guide many souls to God.
John also served as the spiritual advisor to Queen Johanna, who was both a devotee and wife of the emperor. Although the emperor loved her, he was fickle-minded. This led the queen to endure many hardships. But once she accepted John as her spiritual director, his guidance helped her to patiently endure her sufferings.
She immersed herself in religious devotions more than ever before. As the saying goes, “a corrupted heart makes everything bitter,” the emperor grew angry over her pious ways. He entered into arguments with her, suspecting that she might have revealed personal matters to John in confession.
Initially, the emperor tried to extract this information indirectly, but when that failed, he began questioning John directly. But John did not reveal anything. As a result, the cruel emperor ordered John to be brutally tortured. Even while enduring severe torture, John uttered only the names of Jesus and Mary. Eventually, he was released, half-dead.
John resumed his preaching with renewed vigor. One day, while looking out from his palace window, the emperor saw John walking along the streets of Prague. He immediately sent for him. He told John that unless he revealed the queen’s confessional secrets, he would have to prepare for death. John declared that he was ready to die. Subsequently, the emperor ordered that John be bound hand and foot and thrown into the Vltava River. This happened on May 16, 1383.
It is said that a divine light shone over John’s body as it floated in the river. When the queen inquired about the cause of the light she saw in the river, the emperor became disturbed. By morning, the news of John’s murder spread, and people crowded the riverbank. Later, John’s body was interred in a nearby cathedral. Numerous miracles, including healings, are said to have occurred at his tomb.
After these events, the queen lived a very sorrowful life and passed away peacefully in 1387. The cruel emperor faced the consequences of his evil deeds. His empire fell into civil war, and he was deposed in 1400.
Within a few short years, many miracles occurred at John’s tomb. Emperors Ferdinand II and Ferdinand III began efforts to canonize John of Nepomuk. During the reign of Emperor Charles VI, John was officially declared a saint. In 1719, his tomb was opened. Even after 330 years, his bones were found to be in perfect condition.
Even his tongue remained intact. From the time of his martyrdom, the people of Bohemia had venerated him as a martyr. The miracles attributed to him were legally verified, and Pope Benedict XIII canonized him as a saint.
